Query: Trying to find out who my paternal grandmother is. My father discovered that a Cherokee woman who always lived down the road from his “family” was actually his blood mother. She related this to him on her death bed when he was 18 years old. My father was Grant Curnutte dob. 1918 who was born around the Kenova, Wayne county, WVA area. His father was Ulissis Curnutte who was married to Rebecca Staley. He was raised by Rebecca, but his “blood” mother always lived down the road from them; even when they moved. I do not know her name and have no idea how to go about finding out anything on her. Would the census records for 1920 show her as Native American? My father is gone now and so is all his family. I really do not know where to begin, but I feel I should try.

John D Webber MD
Query: Seeking information on Walter Webber, Sr., who married Tusa-luh; their son Walter Webber was a metif who acted as an Indian trader, and was also a chief of the Cherokee nation. Webbers Falls on the Arkansas River was named in his honor. The earliest description of Walter Webber is found in Thomas Nuttall’s Journal when the naturalist visited the Cherokee on April 9, 1818, who were then living in the present state of Arkansas. Following a colorful life, Colonel Webber later settled at the Falls in 1829. According to the “Cherokee Cavaliers” by Dale Litton in the OK Historical Society library: “Walter M. Webber married Elizabeth Watie. Their children were: Walter and Charles Theodor Webber. In the History of the Cherokee Indians, Walter Webber is referred to as Lewis Webber.” Lewis Webber is an uncommon name in the Webber line, but common in my Webber ancestors. It may be that their connection with the Cherokee occurred in the late 1700s. Earlier versions of Lewis include Alous and Aloysius.

Query: Have been trying for so long now that it seems forever to trace my Indian heritage. My g-grandmother Rosetta Christen Ann Bledsoe was half-Indian and half-Norwegian. She was from Missouri. She married John Henry Allen, who was a territorial Marshall for Arizona. Being a mormon he inturn married the daughter of an Indian chief. When I was about 13 or so she gave me a photo (cardboard) and a silver wedding band that belonged to the Indian wife. Said “I save these for you Annie, these are yours.” Perhaps someone knows of the marriage. Hope springs eternal right? Also on the other side of my family is a Chaney. Dobbs connection possibly according to stories the Trail of Tears (Dobbs). Also my grandfather Chaney spoke Indian and spent a lot of time at the reservation but don’t know which one. So any help on Allen, Bledsoe, Chaney, and Dobbs would be a great help. Would like to find out before I pass on. These are Cherokee and possibly Blackfoot lineage.
