Query: Looking for the identity of a blind Indian woman whose name I do not know. She was living with my g-g-grandfather, JOHN BURKE, when he married in Rockingham Co. NC in 1826. He referred to her as “Mother.” There is little doubt that John was NOT an Indian….he was a Quaker with bright blue eyes. And there is little doubt that the woman WAS at least raised as an Indian. Family legend says that when she found that John’s wife had put linens on her bed, she jerked them off and replaced them with the usual skins she preferred. Any info on JOHN BURKE the blind, Indian, “Mother” would be greatly appreciated.

Query: My g grandmother was Mary Elizabeth WRIGHT, born in 1865 and died in 1925. She was from Orangeburg SC and she married Thomas SHAW SWAN from North Carolina. In the Census,Thomas identified her a “Full Blooded Cherokee” and he identified himself as “Half Cherokee.” I am surprised the Census Taker let him do that because there was no space for Race, he had the census taker draw a line through Place of Birth for both of them. That let’s me believe that he was proud of their heritage and wanted to leave a message for his ancestors. My grandfather always said that his parents were Indians. Thomas Shaw SWAN, and my grandfather Milton SWAN had features that were more Indian than African American. The mixture was probably from Anna Rogers MITCHELL (mother of Thomas) who was from North Carolina and, as far as I know, she was African American. The only Elizabeth WRIGHT that I can find in Orangeburg during that time period is identified as BLACK in the Census. I have no photographs of her sorry to say. Thank you for helping me to sort this out.

Query: I am trying to research a family story which I have proved to be mostly true. The story goes that John Dawson, a full blood Cherokee indian married a french woman who bore him 2 sons. These 2 sons were kidnapped by John Dawsons brother who was Chief Dawson, Chief of the Indian Tribe. Chief Dawson raised the boys for 9 years because he wanted them to learn the Indian ways. The story goes that the name Dawson was changed to Vancil to avoid the big Massacre? One of the sons is named John Dawson Vancil or Vansill, born in 1824 possibly in Illinois. His brother’s name I am not sure of, but possibly Edward. I know that John Dawson Vancil died in Choctaw co, Ok in 1914. He was married 3 times and had a wide range of kids. Query: My grandmother tells me that we have cherokee ancestry. Unfortunately she couldn’t give me much information. Apparently my ancestors who were native american did not like to talk about it. However she did tell me that her grandmother’s name was FERTILLY(I think that’s how it is spelled)LOFTON and she had a twin sister named ARTILLY LOFTON and that they might have had the last name of MEADOWS(again not sure)also that their mother was 100% native american and that they were from one of the tribes from the Pascagoula, MS region. If you have any info please contact me. I know the info i have given is vague but if you think you know anything please feel free to contact me.
