Query: In response to:
Gary Stanfield Query: I am trying to locate any information on Jacob Cable, b 22 Sept, 1806 in Scioto County, OH, and died 5 Feb, 1893 south of Palisade, Hitchcock County, Nebraska. He married Elizabeth Holmes 22 Oct, 1829 in OH. Elizabeth was the daughter of John K. and margaret (James) Holmes. Jacob was supposed to be a full blooded Cherokee whose family made the Trail of Tears trip and then migrated to Missouri, Ohio and other states. Any info would be appreciated.
Sorry, I tried to reach you at your email address and got bounced. I don’t think I can add very much to that, but I wonder if you know the names of Jacob’s children. I am looking for a Melissa Cable who, according to the 1880 census, was born in 1837 in Scioto County. Her father is listed as Jacob Cable and her mother listed as Holmes. In 1880 Jacob Cable was 73 years old and listed as a farmer living in Walnut, Phillips, Ks. His parents were both born in Pennsylvania. The oral history in our family has Melissa Cable Lewis as the descendant of a family that came from Switzerland. She was apparently raised in a Mennonite family and was known when she married to serve “seven sweets and seven sours” on her table everyday. Heavy use of pickling, sounds like. I’m not sure how to reconcile the two stories. If her father was a full-blooded Cherokee, possibly Melissa made a great deal of her “Mennonite” (perhaps through her mother?) background so she could pass as white. At any rate, she remained married in Ohio while her father Jacob moved out west. I’m quite sure she did not remain with the Mennonite faith throughout her life; she was a regular Church of Christ churchgoer with her husband James Alexander, Alec or Alexander Lewis. There were many Jacob Cables among the family that emigrated from Swizerland, but I have not nailed a good match for Melissa’s father yet. I would love to hear from you about your progress in researching Jacob Cable. Feel free to contact me!

I am the first in my family to be interested in family history and my parents were not interested in discussing it. My entire family is from Western NC for the last couple of hundred years. Query: John Nelson Robinson Married Elizabeth Moore. Crab Orchard, Kentucky mid 1840-1860’s. John Nelson Robinson was drowned about 1860’s on a river while trading on a barge. Rumor in the Robinson clan somewhere…was a marriage of a Cherokee line. I have heard if a Cherokee is in your line, your relatives down the tree will always retain their hair color/not graying…is it true? Seems to be on our side, only a sprinkling of gray in late age. I am hunting any Robinsons that seem to be in this line or Moore or Carter. I am hoping to track down the Cherokee line…some said were were somehow kin to Daniel Boone…We just can’t seem to find parents of Elizabeth Moore, or any relatives from John Nelson Robinson…line. Any help…maybe something will align to your tree?
