Query: My great-great grandmother was Minnie Hutoga Nichols born in 1868 in Athensville, IL. Her parents were James V. Nichols and Charlotte Marinda Scoggons (listed in Census books as Marinda). My grandmother told us that Minnie was Cherokee. Other family says maybe 1/2 Cherokee. My grandmother pronounced Minnie’s middle name as “you-TOW-gee” if that means anything to anyone. She lived in Athensville and Greene County, Illinois most of her life. She lived in Alton, IL for the last years. Minnie was married to James Western Wright in 1883 and later to Silas Bartelbaugh about 1900. I have not been able to verify her Cherokee lineage. I would be eternally grateful to anyone who can provide insight into her genetic Cherokee line.

He was full Cherokee. She married John Ruban Ely. She had seven or eight children. My grandpa was her sixth child. He was born in DeLeon,Texas on August 30, 1906 if that helps.
