Query: I have just been told my great-great grandmother’s name was Rachel Richards. She was full Cherokee. She had a sister with the name of Cora. It is our understanding these names would translate from the Cherokee language to American. They were married directly from the reservation (I don’t know which one). Her husband’s name was William Lamm.

Query: Cherokee ancestor, girl from Tennessee educated in a convent/mission school and married a Frenchman, name unknown. Family surnames: Jones (Walter, Charles) from Oklahoma, Texas; Crawford; also Bethel, Texas and Kansas. Jones, Crawford, Cutrer. My father, William Wesley was born in Miami Texas, moved to Oklahoma 1910, grandfather was a prairie dentist all through west Texas and Oklahoma in late 19th century. He has a Cherokee ancestor, a woman who was educated in a mission Tenn? Okla?), and married a white man. Not much more to go on than this.

(I know the Black Hills are in Montanna, but that’s what he said) Her name was either Sarah or Susan, I’m not sure, and my Grandfather is no longer around to ask.

Query: Christian, Bloodworth, Russell: Mary Matilda Christian, my Cherokee g-g-grandmother, married Frank Russell and had one son, Franklin Russell (1/2), who married and had John Russell (1/4). This is my father’s (Robert Franklin Russell) line. Later Mary married Bloodworth; they had no children (he had children from a previous marriage). The Bloodworth line knew Mary well, and I would like to find any of the Bloodworths related to the Bloodworths of Missouri. Mary had two brothers, one of whom became a minister (so says the family lore). I am also looking for any relatives of my great grandfather, Franklin Russell, who separated himself from my grandfather because of a jealous second wife. He and his second son by her (my great half uncle) may have had info regarding Mary. Thank you for any leads on Mary or the early Russells.

Query: Looking for information on an Ella Wolfe, she was married to Herman Voss in the late 1800’s in Preble County, Ohio. They had 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. The youngest girl Maude was born 26 October 1901 in Preble County Ohio, her birth certificate listed her mother Ella Wolfe as Cherokee Nation. Ella died in November 1954 and is buried in Zion Cemetary near Eaton, Ohio. Maude Voss married Miron Burch and had 5 children. My Father was the youngest son. Maude died in 1991 and is buried in Mound Hill-Union Cemetary in Eaton, Ohio. I am searching for any information about Ella or her family. Any information on how to search for people of Cherokee descent would be apreciated.

Query: Hicks: (?) All I know is that my sons grandfather died of a snake bite either in the 6o’s or 70’s in Virginia. His Tribal card was from the NC Nation. Query: Searching for info about great great grandmother: Julia Caroline Pursley. Have been told that she was Cherokee, orphaned on Trail of Tears. Then adopted by a family named Pursley from georgia. Their daughter Lucinda married a Jim Hopkins who was from Oklahoma or NE Texas (Paris?). Their children included Ludie (male), Lucille (female), and my grandmother, Miranda, who married my grandfather, Elmer Presley Hardin. (possibly Lucille or another daughter married Man Bequette and they lived in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.) We understand the records at the reservation were destroyed in a fire. Query: Chaney (Chief): In 1946, when I was 14, I saw in an old encyclopedia set where I attended high school, Killlbuck, Ohio, a picture and short history of an Indian Chief. I cannot remember his Indian name, but his English name was Chaney. I believe he was Cherokee but I’m not sure. My family story is so common: This Indian ancestor signed a treaty to place his people on a reservation. His son refused to go, he fled into the hills and married a white woman. Query: All my life my grandfather told that his grandmother was Cherokee. She was buried in the mountains near Hendersonville, NC. Her grave was vandalized and the authorities identified her as Cherokee. According to my late grandfather, James Sexton, she ran a brothel and had and illegitamit son that she gave the last name of Sexton. My grandfather was proud of his heritage and on occasion when he would pick up a tourist at the Asheville airport, he drove a taxi, the passenger would say that their family came over on the Mayflower, my grandfather would tell them that his family was there to greet them when they got off the boat. Wright, Noah-I am looking for informaiton on my grandfather Noah Wright, he was born April 15, 1895. I am told he was born on the Cherokee reservation but I am not sure. His parents names were Alex Wright and Emiline (Southerland) Wright. I have also been told that he was full Cherokee but I am not sure because my mother told me he had blue eyes. They had three sons Jim Houston born 1895, Pecos Greer born 1897, and Roy Alfred born Feb. 3 1903. Two daughters Effie May born 1897 married Saul Macklehannon (was Pinkerton detective on railroad), Sybil Ilene born 1901, married Eugene Beechman. Sam had a blacksmith shop and sold Dodge wagons in Craig, Co. until he became ill then moved to Arizona to live with one of his daughter not sure which one. We think around Globe. Sam’s grandfather had a farm in Tenn.’s they were taken from their home he was killed. Grandmother walked the Trail of Tears. I was told she gave birth on the way to Oklahoma, we believe it was a girl not sure.

Mother’s maiden name unknown but do know she was a full blooded Cherokee born in 1838 and taken from her tribe to a mission school in Indiana. James and Harriet also had three sons, James, Thomas, and Mike all born in Iowa. Mary Ellen married a man named John Powell and had two children John and Ida and we do not know much of them. Mary Ellen died 16Sept1816 and is buried near Sallisaw. Ok. I would appriciate any information regarding Mary Ellen Hogan or her parents.

Query: King, Viola Missouri Byrd- died in Bendale MS. This is my great-grandmother and was half Cherokee. Her mother’s name was Roxie Viola, maiden name unkown to me. She died 26 March 1891 in Lake County, Indiana. She had a brother, Benjamin Turman Bryant b. 1815 and two sisters; Sarah Ruann Bryant b. 1821 and Martha Bryant b. 1830. All of her siblings were born in Indiana. Her parents were Josiah Bryant and Mary Turman. Josiah was born 9 March 1784 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. His father was also named Josiah, b. abt 1754 in South Carolina and his mother was Lydia Ratliff. Any information on the Bryants and their connection, if any, to the Cherokee would be appreciated.
