Query: Brown ancestry: I have been told I am 1/8 Cherokee. I get my blood from my mother’s side. My great grandmother was a Brown and is said to have been full-blooded Cherokee. A friend whom I have lost track of (a Seminole) was trying to help me and started calling me “Chilatchee”. Does that mean anything to anyone? G.Grandma Brown may have relocated from the south to New Jersey (West Long Branch/Red Bank/Monmouth County areas) in the late 1800s or early 1900s. She wed a man named Poole and they had several children (6 I think). They gave birth to my grandfather Raymond Douglas Poole b.1918 d.1993. The Poole family was politically involved & the Native American background was never talked about as a source of embarassment, or to avoid discrimination. I have very little info. All my answers have since gone to the grave.

Query: Sanders, Clampet, Masten Surnames: Desperately seeking any information regarding my maternal g-grandfather Hardy Holman Sanders/Saunders (1806~NC?) that married Catherine Anne Clampet in 1835 Alabama. This union produced 12-13 children; only one is known today: Andrew Mastin Sanders (abt 1837~1920). As in most cases today, was unaware of my maternal Indian heritage until indepth research began. Maybe I was told as a child and just didn’t realize it. Would someone please give me their interpretation of the words “Black Dutch” in reference to one’s race? Catherine Clampet was the daughter of Mathias Masten Clampet; son of Richard Clampet/Elizabeth Masten; daughter of John Masten/Sarah Turpin. Is there an Indian heritage here too? William Masten’s decendants may be viewed on Family Tree Makers Genealogy Site, Peddycord Junction. It is extensive and quite complete. Through the years, I have found dozens of Hardy Sanders but not mine. By him having 12-13 children, probably all before 1850, there must be a multitude of relatives “out there” today. Surely someone else is also looking for my two grandpa Sanders’ connections. Any tidbit, tiny morsel or bone would really make me smile.

Query: My great grandmother on my father’s side was a full blooded Cherokee, but I am having a very hard time trying to find her name. My father was Elmon Gaskins, born 1929 in Lakeland, Lanier County, Georgia and died in 1991. His mother, my grandmother, was named Sarah Ann Royals, (b. March 17,1898, and died March 21, 1981). According to my father, (whom I really met for the first time when I turned 18 in 1991, three months before his death), the mother of Sarah Ann Royals was a full blooded Cherokee. Sarah was married to a Harrison Gaskins Jr., who died when my father was only five. The other members of the Gaskins family never accepted Sarah because it was so “taboo” for him to have been married to a “half-breed”. As a result, my father not only lost complete contact with his father’s side of the family, but he never knew anyone on his mother’s (Sarah’s) side of the family. My father and my grandmother are buried in the Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery in Nashville, Berrien County, Georgia. This is right next to Lakeland, Lanier County, where my father grew up on a farm. He had two sisters, Velma and Evie, both of whom are deceased. If you know anything, please let me know, since it would be of immense help. I am trying to get a death record of Sarah Ann, but I doubt it would list her mother.
