Query: My grandmother was Betty Ann Walker Brookshire. My father always said that she was Indian. She lived in East Texas and died around 1913 from TB. Daddy remembered taking her mother into town to buy tobacco when she got her “government check” but he was only 7 when his mother died. He has been dead for many years also, as are all his siblings. I only remember that the Indian tribe began with “C” and I have been able to find no mention of my grandmother in any genealogies except as married or mother. Isn’t it sad that some of us never think about our heritage until middle age confronts us? Thank you for any help that you may be able to provide in my quest.

Query: George Hoffman b. abt 1840, d. 3/8/1904, in New Hampton, New Jersey (also known as the Washington,Warren County & Changewater, Hunterdon County areas). He was a Civil War Veteran, Co. 11 Reg. NJ Vol. Infantry. George was also an Andersonville prisoner. At some point he met & married Rebecca Groff.
I have no info on Rebecca as of yet. This is where I’m stuck.
Yes, everyone in the family says the Indian is Cherokee, byt I am not convinced of that. I believe Rebecca was half Am. Indian. I have old photos of her and her daughter, they clearly have dark skin and hair. They also have an “Indian look” to them(I know that dosen’t mean much).
Rebecca groff was my gg-grandmother. She and George had several children. One of them was John M. Hoffman. John and his wife, “Lizzie” Kinney had several children. One of them was Celestia B.R. Hoffman, my Grandmother.
My g-grandfather John had a sister named Margaret Hoffman. She married George Edson Crotsley. The old photos of Margaret and her mother Rebecca, show them to have dark skin and hair(I know that dosen’t mean anything).
I spoke to my aunt about the Indian in the family. She had me contact my grandmother’s 1st. cousin. Her name is Carrie Crotsley Cadira. She knew a little bit about the Indian but not enough. Carrie said she had the Indian hair and ruddy skin. The following is what she told me:
Rebecca’s father or grandfather was a Trapper/Trader. Carrie didn’t know where exactly where he traded but the Indian woman was bought at a slave market in Easton, Pennsylvania(Easton, is on the Delaware River). She also said that the Indian woman was local. She didn’t know exactly what that meant. The two may or may not have been married, but they had children and lived as husband & wife. Carrie also believes that there is another Indian woman somewhere in the family. That man also was a Trapper/Trader.
I asked Carrie if she had any knowledge of the Indian being recorded as Black or Indian in any of the Census Records or Church Records, etc. Her answer was that if she had been told she couldn’t remember.
Carrie said that no one spoke much about the Indian because at that time it was not something to be proud of. She said that the family tried to keep it quiet. Only family ever talked about it and when they did it was not in any great detail. She was told by her mother that the Indian was Cherokee.
Across the river from Easton, is Phillipsburg, NJ. The Washington/Changewater areas are about twenty miles east of Phillipsburg.
When I was young, my father and his mother told me there was Indian in the family. I have fair skin and light brown hair. My father’s white skin was darker than mine. When my father was out in the sun, his skin would get a reddish brown color. He had very dark brown hair and brown eyes as did his mother. On my father’s military records under “complexion” it said “ruddy”.
If the Indian woman was a “local Indian” than she may have been a Delaware and not a Cherokee. Is it possible that a Cherokee could have been somehow local to that area? Can you give me some hints of where to go next for info? I can’t seem to find this person or any info on Rebecca Groff.
Thanks for listening to my frustration on this issue. I will be greatful for any help!

Query: My great-grandmother’s name was Tennessee Francis Cole. She was of Cherokee mother and Dutch father. I don’t know her parent’s names. She married a Blankenship in Southern West Virginia. I will enter his full name as soon as I find it. He was half Cherokee (mother) and I don’t know what nationality the Blankenship name is. I will find more information if possible by vist to Wyoming County, West Virginia. I know that my grandfather was raised at Mill Creek, in that county. My grandfather’s name was Arthur Blankenship, later he added the first name of Chester to be Chester Arthur. My aunt was visiting a Cherokee reservation in eastern Tennessee, and was recognized to be of Eastern Kentucky Cherokees, confirmed by my grandfather, who would say very little else about his origins. I plan to try to get to the Pineville, W.Va. courthouse this summer to dig for information. If you have any information about Tennessee Francis Cole, I would be greatly appreciative of it, and am quite happy to share anything I find out with family.

Query: I am helping my husband, Mark Dennis Sinclair, research his Cherokee roots. From what I have found already in the Index to the Final Roll (1889-1914), I believe his best chance for success lay in his link to the ‘Spears’ surname, because this name belonged to several individuals listed in this roll.
Mark’s maternal link to the Spear name is as follows:
Mother – Virginia Duren Sinclair
Maternal grandparents – Richard Duren, born Sept. 25, 1898, died Sept. 1964. Last residence – Purcell, OK
Clara Gertrude Moreland – born June 19, 1904, died in 1997. Last residence – Purcell, OK
Richard and Clara were married in Stigler, OK (Haskell County) Feb. 6, 1921, and moved to Purcell, OK after marriage.
We have been told that the parents of Clara Moreland looked like full-blood Indians. Her father was Plaes Moreland, and her mother was Ethel Spears Moreland. It is my hope that Ethel Spears is Mark’s link to an ancestor on the Indian rolls. If anyone has information about Ethel Spears or her link to a ‘Spears’ on the Indian roll, please give us your assistance. We are very proud of Mark’s Indian blood – it is very evident in his appearance and in that of his offspring. Thank you in advance for your help.

Query: Trying to find out if I am of Native Amerian heritage. My ggrandmother was Mary Magdaline Tarwater. May’s father was James Henry Tarwater and his father was William C. Tarwater from South Carolina, born 1814 and died 1876 in MO. His wife was Sara E. Gillborn about 1819 and died 1893 in MO. Her daughter said that Mary was a full blooded Native American. I also am looking for information on Lucy Mary McKinney. She married Charles Kirkpatrick Dearman. They had two sons. James Henry (my grandfather on mother’s side) and Willard D. (uncle) Dearman. Charles came from KY and Lucy Mary came from AR? Mary was born 1880 I believe and she died in 1932. She was granted land according to the land grants given to Native Americans but died before she knew anything about it. “I am not”, looking for land or money. “I am looking for my heritage.” I have always felt that I have Native American in my family and I feel a kindred spirit towards the Native Americans. According to my grandmother, Lucy was living with a Mr. Briggles, not sure if they were married or just living together. He ran James off and would not allow him to live anywhere near his mother or him. James was on his own from the age of 12. The family lived in Arkansas. The name on the tombstone is Lucy Kennedy Gwen. I know that is the wrong name as my family has always said so. Also for some reason the name Lucy G. McKinney seems to stck in my mind. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you for your help. “Again let me stress the point, I am not looking for money, or land, only my heritage.”

Query: Am searching for info on a Hattie Mae Thompson. Born April 13,1898. I believe in Texas, Possible Clearwater? Sweeetwater?or Muelshoe? She had a younger sister named Rose. Hattie also had a brother named Charlie and one named John. Their last name was Simmons. They were older than her so I believe that they were possible half brothers. Hattie was Cherokee and Chocktaw. I do have a photo of her around 1950. Hattie married a Samuel H. Mills in the early 1900’s. I believe that they were married in Texas but not sure. They moved to DeWitt, Arkansas at some point. During their marriage they had 10 children: Fern, Sybil, Treve, Ira, Wanita, Irene, James, William (W.D), Hattie, Samuel Jr. (not in order of birth) Samuel Sr had been married previously to a Hazel ( ). They had several Children A Clyde and a Hazel (not sure of her name). Samuel died in Arkansas in 1948. Hattie moved to Arizona, Calif, Arizonia and back to Calif. She later married a Dave Buck in California. She died Jan. 1967 and is buried in the Golden Gate Cemetery. This is all I have at this point. It is possible that James is still alive Aprox 70 yrs old, and maybe one of my sisters. Irene married a Stein. Some of my neices names were Cathy and Pam Wages and or Gonzales. There is a Mike and a Cheryl I believe the name is Pepechello (I may have spelling wrong.) The relation will probably be in Ca. Some might be in Kansas. Please contact me if you have even the slightest hint that there might be a connection!!!
