Query: I am blond haired and blue eyed, but still I do have Indian roots in my ancestors. That has nothing to do with what I need you or someone to know about. The digging of a somewhat burial ground. In Tennessee along the clinch river just befor Claiborne county the government began building a four-lane highway and they found they were digging the graves of Indians. For some reason they are going ahead with the road and from what I understand it is being studied by archiologist or somthing like that. What I don’t understand is the road can easily detor this area, why is it possible to do this? How can anyone have the right to disturb a grave? I know the governmant is very powerful but just because this is a small town where most people are not concered I think it is wrong and should be stopped before they keep going any further. My question is what can we do? I am very serious. I would like some answers if you know more about how the law works in these matters.

Query: In 1976 our county had a sequicentennial and there was an article submitted by a local high school history teacher that said my family is descended from Chief Doublehead. I am researching to prove this. The story is this: John Hough an early pioneer in Lauderdale County married one of Chief Doublehead’s daughters. The Hough family was from Chesterfield County, SC. They migrated to Lauderdale County, AL (perhaps via KY or NC or TN) near Florence AL and were big land owners and slave holders by 1818, a year before Alabama became a state. Doublehead had a reserve on Blue Water Creek in Lauderdale County, AL. He rented land to whites (many who were in Giles County, TN just above the present AL sate line. Query: I am looking for information on how/where I can find out about Cherokee adoptions between the years 1874 and 1880. I am searching for information on ‘Maud Stubbs’ and am hoping that she was legally adopted around the year 1880. There is a book published on ‘Stubbs Genealogy’ listing her birth year as 1880 which is incorrect. Her ‘parents’ had a son in 1874 who died that same year and I’ve been able to research and prove he was not a twin. I have found her listed on the Federal Census for 1880 with this family lising her age as 6 years old, birthplace Massachusetts. I have done a lot of research and cannot find a record of her birth in Massachusetts between 1874 and 1880 but ironically, Massachusetts remains listed as her birthplace on the Fed. Census until 1920 which states her birth place as “United States.” I still have probate name change records I can research at the Archives in Boston but I’m hoping that other sources are available to research.

He married one of his first students, Emmeline Jefferson. They had three children, George Davis, Mattie Davis and Charles H. Davis. They settled in Cane Creek Community (20 miles west of Muscogee, Oklahoma) inside the Creek Nation. He died two months prior to his last child’s birth August 29 1882. Query: I am looking for information anyone might have on a Sarah Elizabeth Carter Smith, and her family. She was married to Cortes Smith on Oct. 11, 1883 in Ray county Mo. They had 9 children. One of her daughters was my Great-Grandmother. I am trying to find her name, or the name of one of her children or relatives, on an indian roll, so I can join the Cherokee tribe. Her fathers name was Henry Meredith, and I am told he was the Chief of his tribes counsel at some point. He was married to Either a Mary Jane, Nancy Jane, or Jane(?) Hendricks. It is possible that his father was a John Meredith and his mother was Elizabeth Whisenhunt. A relative of mine is trying to prove this. The information we have seems to add up…and if we could prove that John and Elizabeth are his parents, we have a better chance of finding the name of an ancestor on a roll.

Query: I am lookin for information on the Cherokee indian Bearpaw lineage. I was told my grandmother America Spears was orginal America Bearpaw but was adopted by a Spear’s family they where also Indian. America Spear’s married James Granville Craig, in either Lawrence County or Independence County, Arkansas. The Craig family become orphans during Indian removal and settled near Batesville, Arkansas. James G.Craig had three siblings Cynthia (Jensie) Craig Bales, Polly Craig and George Craig. George died with his father during the Indian removeal. Census say that America Spears was born in Arkansas in 1820. I think this information is incorrect. Maybe she was born in Redclay,Tennessee or Georgia . I have found Spear’s in the household of Bearpaw’s if I can tie the Spear’s in with the bearpaw family maybe this will help solve this mystery.
