We were always told that we had Cherokee blood on my father’s side of the family but did not know how much. He was born in Tennessee near the Smoky Mountains. Can any of this information be true? Query: This is a real needle in a haystack kind of question. I’ve an ancestor born somewhere in NC in 1823 named John T. Cross. His son, my Great Grandfather, was apparently nicknamed “the Indian.” This is one of the very few facts about him which have come down to me, for he died when my Grandmother was a little girl and her mother remarried and spent most of her adulthood with her second husband and the combined families. Is there any way of finding out any particulars about my ancestor and if he was in part Cherokee, or other tribe which might have been in NC in 1823 or before?

Query: I’m looking for a Cherokee connection in the McDaniel family from pre-1870. The family story is that my great grandfather “Jimmy Mac” McDaniel was 1/2 Cherokee (on his mother’s side). His 1/2 brothers from a previous marriage (white) were very harsh with him because he was a 1/2 breed. He had a fight with one of the brothers over a pig, and shot and killed his white brother. The 1/2 brother was simply known as “Doc” as he was a student in medical school. After shooting and killing his half-brother, he fled to Texas, where he married Rosie Marsh in Sterling County, TX in about 1890-1895. He never talked about his family, and refused to contact his father to get on the Cherokee registry (to anyone’s knowledge). I do not know the names of Jimmy Mac’s mother or father, but I’m hoping someone is familiar with the story, even in some vague way.

Query: I am looking for information regarding, Ezekiel Starr, born 18 June,1881 in Cherokee Nation West, IT. His father was James “Hickory” Starr, DOB: 13 Feb. 1833, in Cherokee Nation East, Tennessee and his mother was Emma Rider, DOB 18 Sept. 1842, in Flint Dstrict, Cherokee Nation West, IT. I know that an allotment of land was given to Ezekiel by the government in Grove, Oklahoma. If anyone has any information, or can tell me where to look, it would be great! We do have a date of death for Ezekiel as 1958, but that seems to be wrong. We were told that he died when his only Son, J.C. Starr was 12 years old, which would be 1935. He was married to Catherine Edna Foote.
