Query: Hi! We’re trying to locate ancestors of Elizabeth Didama Troutt or Trout (born about 1825 in Calhoun Co., GA and married John Morris 12 May 1844 in Bartow (Co.?) GA.).
Elizabeth Didama Troutt was a granddaughter of Ash Hopper (family history tells us that Ash Hopper was a full or 1/2- blood Cherokee) We are interested in possible connection with the Cherokee “Granny Hopper” or Cherokee “Ol’ Hop” but haven’t found a link yet.
According to Timberlake’s journals, “Old Hop” died about 1752, and “Little Carpenter” assumed his place as the priciple chief of Chota. Our ancestor EDT was born abt. 1825, and her mother was Annie Hopper(b. about 1780 according to the 1850 census) so OUR Ash Hopper(Annie’s father) would have been born about 1750-60 using normal 20-25 yr. generations…that means our Ash Hopper couldn’t be “Old Hop”, but possibly a son/grandson. There are 3 Ash Hoppers in Indian rolls Dr. Emmitt Starr’s book on Cherokees.
We THINK that the only Ash Hopper which might be ours is the one found on the Census of Cherokees taken in GA in 1835. He was over 16 years old, living on Peavine Creek, GA with 1 female over 18, and 2 females under 18. In a book called “Cherokee Planters in GA…” Vol. II, p. 315, it says Ash Hopper was a halfblood, claiming 15 acres he lost on Peavine creek, the previous winter (to white settlers), when he moved to Hamilton Co., TN.
If anyone knows of a possible Ash Hopper or Elizabeth Didama Troutt (Trout) connection with our family, please share!!!
