Query: Seeking historical or personal information about John Wesley Ross, b. ca. 1824 prob. TN. Oral tradition is that he was the child of a TN Ross girl and a man from Boston who wrote books and taught at Indian schools, and travelled in TN and MS. Something happened to John’s parents (not sure what) and he was raised by a family, Meeks, Meigs. John Wesley Ross came West to Old Settler land, present-day Newton and Pope Counties, AR and settled with mixed-blood families (Blevins, Standridge, Yates, Meeks) around Richland Creek, where he was ultimately carried off and killed by bushwhackers in the Civil War while plowing. (He shows up there married as of 1844). Other, more or less plausible oral history tellings which don’t necessarily all fit together and may or may not be true: He was a “scout” on the Trail of Tears, and left back East because he was blamed for things he didn’t do because he was a “halfbreed.” His father was McCollum, McHolland, Mulkey, or something like that. My theory is that he may have been a child of a student and missionary at Brainerd or Candy Creek. Maybe a son of missionary Holland and Jenny Ross (later Mulkey), the latter of whom was young when her mother died and was taken in by her sister, Elizabeth Ross Meigs. I’ve been trying to research his origin for ten-plus years and would like any info, speculations, historical points, discussion, etc.

Query: Sapa/Sappa, (unknown): We have an unusual situation. My fiance’s grandfather was adopted as a very young child. He goes by the adopted parents name now, but he remembers the last name Sapa. (spelling is also unknown) He does not know his real first name, only a nickname Darwa. His adopted Irish parents were very prejediced and told him only that he was Cherokee and he was lucky to be out of the reservation if he asked about his true ancestory. To complicate things, his birth certificate is nowhere to be found. His children have searched archives and have done extensive research to no avail. They were told that it may have been destroyed in a fire occuring in 1920. Grandfather is getting rather old and we are trying to solve this mystery as soon as we can.

Query: Thomas Harvey Shelton was born around 1850 (place unknown). He was Cherokee and practiced both white and Native medicine around Pryor Creek, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). He applied for readmittance of citizenship in 1896 and was referred to the committee on citizenship at the same time as Daniel Ross and his son. I show this from Tribal Council proceedings as indicated in the Cherokee Advocate. Can anyone tell me where to go from here. My great aunt was going to go down to enroll in the 1930’s but didn’t want to. She had proof but she died before explaining anything. She just said her father was Cherokee. Dr. Shelton also worked for the Osage Rez when they were in Kansas. I belive he is related to the Shelton’s in Emmett Starr’s book that were in Bryan’s battalon in the civil war (Joseph and Samuel), Robert and Rebecca Shelton on the Emmigration Rolls, along with the Absolom Shelton who came over on the Trail of Tears (I have record of this). Any information to help a college student out would more the great be appreciated. Wado Nigada!!

Query: John (I.) Springston: Birth, death and marriage dates unknown. I am trying to establish relationship to William Springston, trader and linguist among the Cherokee abt 1750-1790. Also, I would like to determine origins of this family outside CN. John (I) was married to Nancy ______. Nancy was also married to _____ Wilson, Doublehead and John Foreman. Nancy may have been Drumgoole(?). Children of John (I.) we know of were (John) Anderson b. 1813/4 and Issac b.1817 (?). Emmet Starr has documented some of the Springston clan but early family history remains unknown. Sons Anderson and Issac and half brother James Foreman were implicated in the conspiracy to assassinate John Walker in 1835(?), Major Ridge, his son John Ridge and Elias Boudinot in 1842. To be fair we must mention that Major Ridge had assassinated Chief Doublehead earlier in 1807 for the same offense, making land cessions to the whites. Apparently these men served as unaknowledged enforcers for Chief John Ross. Any info on Springston would be appreciated. More than willing to share what I have.
