Query: Trying to trace our roots back to Cherokee tribe. Supposedly my great great grandmother on my mother’s side as well as my father’s side were full blooded Cherokee. Unfortunatley no one has been able to prove this. My mother lived on the reservation in Oklahoma when she was very young. She doesn’t know who they were living with but she went to school with Indian children. Her maiden name is Coffman. My father’s name is Jerry Stephens. His father was Carl Addison or Attison Stephens. His father was Absolum or Absolom Stephens. Supposedly Absolum married a full blooded Cherokee. We found his wife’s name to be Ada Franks. Others have said she wasn’t of Indian decent. Absolum’s father was John Stephens. He married a Martha Jane ???. We wonder if the information was wrong and perhaps Martha Jane was the full blooded Cherokee or the people who said Ada Franks wasn’t Cherokee were incorrect.

She married Robert Lee Lipscomb on 25 Dec 1907. Her bible states that her fathers name was G.A. Hollingsworth, who died in 1940. I believe the name may have been George Asbury, because that was my grandfather’s name. I believe that she and her husband lived around Floyd county, Ga. Query: Searching for my great grandfather and greatgrandmother: his name, Jack Acree a.k.a Jesse Acorn. Her name Cora Atkins. Here is the story. Cora was supposedly left in a fireplace by her family, who were Cherokee. The man that owned the old house, Frank Atkins, found her and raised her with his children. We know Frank had at least one daughter, Mabel, and one son, Jack. The Atkins were also part Cherokee, and were listed on the Dawes rolls. At the time of the Rolls, they were living in Silome Springs AR. Cora grew up and married another full-blood Cherokee named Jack Acree. They had a son and a daughter (Myrtle Marie, my grandmother). Cora and Jack split up and he hooked up with Cora’s foster sister, Mable. Mable raised Myrtle and the boy as hers (Cora was still alive and might have been in Okla) Mabel and Jack also had two daughters. Jack died at Lake Village AR and Mabel died either there or aroud Little Rock. Before Mabel and Jack got together, she had a child, a daughter, I believe. Does any of this sond familiar? Help! We are at a dead end. We thought getting Myrtle’s birth cert. would help. Surprise! She doesn’t have one.

Query: Seeking info on Delitha Jane Higgins, born in 1871 in Tenn. She was fullblood Indian. I’ve been unable to trace her parents or any ancestors. Higgins name may have been given to her by whites or she may have been adopted into or raised by Higgins family. Does anyone know if it was common to give Indians white names. Also do you know about bands of Indians who may have still existed in Tenn. in the mid 1800’s.

Query: Looking to trace roots to possibly be put on the roll, if not me then my mom. I am the daughter of Tamara Jones Ridings, daughter of Joyce McKinley Hill, daughter of Minnie Day McKinley, daughter of Suzie and Robert Day. Come from the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. No one knows anything past that, but we do know that the Cherokee comes from the day side of the family. All previous records were burned. All we have is a book on the McKinleys, but it hasn’t helped. Also, it is believed that I have Cherokee from my dad: Randal Gray Ridings, son of Mary Nell James Ridings, daughter of Nell and Henry James. Nell’s family was the side that had the Indian, that is all that is known. They come from Eden and Danville NC. If anyone could find something I would be eternally greatful. Please email me with any findings. This is really important.

The men from the wagon train attack the Cherokee camp and take three girls in the dark only to return to their camp and discover one girl had only wandered away and returned while they were gone. The Cherokee girl was kept and raised by one of the men, who later married her. They had several boys, one branch was ours and one branch was the family that Davy Crockett was born into. My mothers family is Begley and my fathers is Shepherd. They grew up in Kentucky. I would appreciate any information that might be available. My heritage is important to me. Query: Esther Berry Cawood, wife of Stephen Cawood, my ancestor is listed on several applications in the Guion Miller Roll as Easter Keewood and Short Easter Keywood, a Cherokee woman. One application states that she was the Ideal of her tribe. All the applications state that their parents and grandparents told them about Easter. The three applications I looked at – Margaret Cawood, Charles B. Caywood and Moses G. Keywood all refer to this same ancestor – Easter. Stephen Cawood was born 6 Aug 1724 and died 10 Nov 1810. Esther Berry Cawood was born ca. 1729 and died in March of 1828 at age 99. Family folk lore is that she was the daughter of Chief Keyatoy. Keatoy signed the Treaty of Lochaber 18 Oct 1770. Query: Looking for any information on my beloved grandmother, Susan [Verinda?] Lake. I am 86, and she died in Belle, WV, in 1925, when I was 12. She was born about 1848, in Black Betsy, WV, now abandoned. I do not know her mother’s name- she died in a yellow-fever epidemic when Susan was very young. Her father was a Cherokee Indian from North Carolina named John? Lake. He was a coal-miner. They had at least two other children, named Belle and John. She married William Henry Kuhn, and they lived in Belle, and in Cabin Creek. They had 6 boys. John was killed in a mining accident when Frederick, the youngest, [my father] was 9 months old. When I was a child, my grandmother’s Indian blood was considered a disgrace by the Kuhns, and no one would talk about it. Susan didn’t think so, and I would like to be able to tell my family about it. I think she once said her father’s name was really Gray Feather, or maybe Gray Eagle, but I am not at all sure of that.
