Query: Mary (“Molly”) Jane Wilson, was born Aug. 20, 1871, near Carthage, Mo. She married Charles Dick and died in 1961. She was buried in Garfield County in Oklahoma. The mother of “Molly” was Mary Sanders, who was born Dec. 12, 1838, in Tennessee. Mary Sanders married Perry Wilson, who was born in 1830 in Rockford, Ill. He lived Missouri, Illinois and Leavenworth, Kan. I believe the grandmother of “Molly” is Mary “Polly” Childess, who married William Sanders. Family Story: My late grandfather told me that this direct relative, Mary (“Molly”) Jane Wilson, had a Cherokee grandmother who traveled on the Trail of Tears. Now, the mother of “Molly” was born around the time of the Trail of Tears in the late 1830s in Tennessee, a state with land that once encompassed part of the Cherokee Nation. As far as a possible Cherokee link to Mary “Polly” Childess — apparently the grandmother of the Mary (“Molly”) Jane Wilson in question — my living grandmother says that “Polly” may have traveled across mountains in Virginia at one point in her life. Coincidentally, the Cherokee Nation once encompassed southwestern Virginia. I will track down the source of this Virginia tidbit.

Nancy’s father was Lewis Ransom who, acording to the application, looked full blooded Indian and lived with the Cherokees in Northern Georgia around 1870. Her mother was Susan Leah/Layer Hogshead (spelling variation – Hoxit/Hogsett/Hogsed) who was also of Indian blood. Query: I am trying to find information on my husbands ggmother. The family says she was Cherokee. Her name was Mary Bell Snow. Her parents died in a house fire when she was a young child and she was raised by a “white” family with the last name of Steiger. I do have a copy of her marriage license application. On there it says her parents were Jack and Annie Snow. It states that Mary Bell Snow was born in Armstrong County PA in 1876 or 1877. She married John Henry Arner in 1898 in Clarion County PA. One of their sons was accidentally shot by the father on a hunting trip. From what the family says Mary Bell lost her mind when that happened and had amnesia. John found her in West Virginia working as a waitress. Eventually her memory returned. I don’t know why she went to WVa, if that may have been where her parents were from? Please if anyone has any information I will be happy to share what I have. I don’t have much on the Snows and am trying to find out more.
