Query: Here is what I know: I come by Native American heritage (Cherokee) by my mother’s side of family. My grandma’s name is: Lillian (Tucker-maiden) Wilson names in genealogy are Mamie (Rice) Tucker (my GGrandma); her father Thomas Rice/her mother Martha Alice Inman. Thomas’s father John Madison Rice/mother Mary Inman. Locations where they lived: Stoddard, MO; Pocahontas, AR; Anna, Illinois, Georgia, Carolinas, Tennesse. I am just now finding some connections to family, my grandmother is very tight lipped. All my family has been told over the years that some of our relatives were on the “Trail of Tears” and some died, some relatives still live in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. My question: Do you know these names if yes, what was their part in history and do you know what their Native American genealogy is? Wish I had more info.

Narcissa Collens born 1803 in North Carolina. Married, Milton McClellan 02/23/1825 in Cabarrus County. They lived in Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, McDowell and Lincoln Counties. The last time I saw her name on a census was 1850, listed as Narcissas McClelland age 47. I know Narcissa was Cherokee, because my grandmother said she was. AJ was one of eight it was said that they were of Irish/Cherokee on father’s side: full Cherokee on mother’s side. Those who know have passed. My father TJ McCarty born Sept. 13 1929 Sudan Texas-passed in 1971. He was so lost…he did not know who he was: could not cope with the “white” world, but the Cherokee world was closed to him. I too feel that I walk between two worlds as a “lost child” who needs to know who I am, then I can tell my children and Grandchildren, teach them how to tread lightly on Mother Earth, honor Great Spirit and the ancesters. After all, we are the Seventh Generation… It is up to us to mend the broken Medicine Wheel, along with broken hearts and broken families. I will appreciate any information you have, I do know how dificult that time period was, records and so many were lost to us but walk with Great Spirit. At times I hear them calling in the wind.

Harvey (deceased), the brother of 11 siblings,Oltho, Jess, Ulmer, Mose, Robert, Able, Carri, May, Ina Belle (my grandmother), Maude, and Annie. Warren still lives on the family place in Newton. These 12 children were the product of the union of John C. and Jenny Harvey. John C. harvey was the product of the union of John Harvey and Beth Ann Wakefield sometime in the 1800’s. Beth Ann Wakefield was the name given to the Cherokee woman at some point. My grandmother (Ina Belle) pasted on several years ago but told stories about her father being ashamed of being a “half-breed.” Ina Belle couldn’t hide the fact. Query: Hi, Jim –
Found your query at the All Things Cherokee site and thought I´d put in my two cents:
Nathan Allen Sanders 1819-1898 TN-AR was my 3x great grandfather´s brother (John L. Sanders who married Mary Ann Hogan). They all lived in or around Searcy/Van Buren Counties, AR.
My unsubstantiated records show that Nathan Allen first married Eady Lovitt about 1840 and had four children. He then married about 1854 Kizziah Kissey Brown and had eight children, among whom was Claircy Caldonia Sanders (born 1863 AR) who married James Firestone. I assume this James is your great grandfather. I have no further information regarding them.
Kizziah Brown, however, I show as daughter of Elisha Brown who was born about 1806 in South Carolina. Elisha apparently moved to Missouri where Kizziah (Kissey) was born and then to Searcy Co, AR, where he is shown in the 1840 census (with no wife but with other children). Elisha, apparently, was the son of Samuel Brown who was born about 1772 in the Pendleton District of SC. Samuel was in the 1840 Searcy County census as were several other of his sons.
As to whether Kizziah was the Cherokee lady whose name sounded like “Ka-Car” I have no idea – except that virtually EVERY family line I´ve traced through Searcy County has the same family tradition of a Cherokee grandmother. Never a grandfather. Yours is the first, however, to even guess at a name.
Interestingly, Kizziah’s uncle, Joseph, who married Kizziah Ragland, are described in one query as both “full-blooded Indian” (Brown Family GenForum http://www.genforum.com/brown/). One person thought they might have been Choctaw but later somehow found out they weren’t.
My grandmother was Mima Redman, daughter of Oscar Redman and Martha Ann Sanders, and she, too, related the Native American grandparent tradition – although she didn´t know if it was in the Sanders or Redman lines or elsewhere. One of my sisters has an old photograph of a lady dressed in 1850´s fashion but with Native American accoutrements in her hair – on the back of the photograph someone had written, “Indian-looking:” We have no idea who the lady is.
Well, this doesn´t answer your query but it does give you a lead on Nathan’s wife, Kizziah – whose Brown lineage many people are researching.
Regards,
John Redmond Stevens
