We should definitely remember this, and save “hard copy” for our children! I find it particularly difficult with the research into my Cherokee American ancestery. I do know why however…they were “spread” by force all over creation! No records along the “Trail of Tears”, eh? Especially when your female relative gave birth, and died along the “trail”.

In the mid-1700’s, a man named Hezakiah Rutlidge married an indian woman whose name is simply recorded in our family records as “Cherokee” in the Carolinas. Their daughter, Azakiah Rutlidge, married Steven Taylor, 9 generations back from me. I have found the name Taylor to be quite predominant on the Dawes Rolls, and our family lived in the Carolina’s, Tennessee, and Arkansas, all Cherokee country. I have found the names of many of my ansestors on the Dawes Rolls, but without dates, I cannot be sure if they are the same people or not. I am certain that I have distant relatives in the Cherokee nation, I would really like to know them and to learn something of the culture that my ansestors once shared with the Cherokee people. Charley was born 1861-1866, and Annie was born in abt 1870, daughter of John R. White and Martha Matlock. siblings of Annie- Eliza Jane, James, and John ML White, all born in Boone Co, Arkansas. Query: My query is two-fold: First, the community I was born into, grew up in and now live in, is called Black Fox–just south of Cleveland, Tennessee. I had heard all my life that the area was named for a Cherokee chief but I have never been able to verify this. Was there a prominent Cherokee figure named Black Fox or is this story apocryphal? Secondly: While browsing the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial homepage–The Virtual Wall–I came across Robert Lee Blackfox. He was a Native-American from Talequah (sp?) Oklahoma. He was drafted and gave his life for our country in February of 1970. God rest his soul. I was wondering if there WAS a Black Fox personage of some historical significance, could Robert Lee be one of his decendents? If such were the case, the ironies would be tragically staggering. Thanks for whatever help you can give.

Jodie Henderson
Query: My name is Jodie Henderson, and my maiden name was Shipplett. My son is doing a project on Indians, and I was trying to research and verify the Indian heritage in our family so that he can do his research on the tribe of Indians that we are related to. My aunt Jewel, who now lives in Florida but who is from West Virginia, gave me the following info. On my dad’s side of the family (Shipplett) there is the following tree:
1My dad-William Earl Shipplett (1926-1995)
2His dad-William Carl Shipplett
3His grandfather-“Will” Shipplett
4His great Grandfather-(unsure of first name) Shipplett, married to an Indian named “Moomau” or “Moomaw.”
So, my dad is 1/8 indian. She thinks that the Indian woman named “Moomau” (last name??) was a Cherokee. Her tribe lived in Northern Virginia. I did a search on the ancestry plus database, and found:
Father: Edward Shipplett
Mother: Harriett Moomau
But I don’t think that is the right person, but it seems too coincidental to find a Shipplett and a Moomau for it not to be somehow related. Do you have any other info on the Shipplett/Moomau ancestry, especially any information on the name of Moomaw or Moomau as a part of the Cherokee Indian heritage?
