Query: I am trying to find out my ggrandmothers’ maiden name. Her given name is Caroline and she was born in 1838. She married a man from Al. named Brooks and had a son in 1865 in Hardeman, Tn. James Y. Brooks and a dau in 1867 name Minerva A. Brooks. I found them in the 1880 census in Hardin, Tn. and she had married a man named William Sherbet, she was widowed and head of household, and had a yr. old son named William Sherbet….I can not find out what happened to Brooks that she was married to, but the census listed him as coming from Al, and had her race listed as white. From all I have read that was not uncommon as the Indians were treated so poorly that they would change thier race on documents, because of that reason.I found where she married again for the third time to a James Brawley in Mcnairy, Tn. in 1881. I have a picture passed down to me from my mother, and my mother had told me she was a full blooded Cherokee, and she certainly looks like she is. James Brooks by her first marriage is my grandfather. He moved to Ar. with his family…but have not been able to find out what happened to Caroline, or been able to find out her maiden name. Any help would be deeply appreciated!

Query: I am looking for any information that might help me to link my Smalling surname to Cherokee. Here is what I presently know. My father has claimed that my family does have Cherokee blood, but that he could never substantiate the fact within our bloodlines. Also, I think that the Smallings who have Cherokee ancestry may descend from a relationship of a Smalling plantation owner and a slave in the Piney Flats, Tn area, around the years 1775-1800. The children of the slave(murdered over the romance with white owner)allegedly moved into the wilderness of mountains(away from Piney Flats) and took Cherokee mates, thus creating a group of Smallings that were of three races, African, Caucasian (Danish), and Cherokee. I would like to know if there is anything to this story. Are there Smallings like this? Were there ever? The story is odd, but I think that of all groups, the Cherokee may hold the key to a mystery about my kin, the Smallings. According to the legend, the White Smallings, around 1800, lost all their wealth, due to the love affair of the African woman to the White man, and the results of the affair. Murder of slave woman, result: children of slave woman put curse on Smallings who were only white. They lost all their wealth. I believe the responsible male (lover of the slave, but not the murderer of her) to have been Solomon Smalling, and the female (slave) to have been properly named “Sarah”. I’d like to find any Cherokee Smallings who might be able to solve this puzzle. The results, if the story is true, are that the Smalling family has a Caucasian/African genetic group, and a Caucasian/African/Chrerokee group due to the controversial romance of this colonial couple. This story may even be a legend of Tennessee, and NC Cherokee, somewhere, and I wonder if anyone else knows about these Smallings. The slave also may be called the Smalling heir, and she and the plantation owner may be buried beside one another or even together. Looking for a gravesite as well. Contact me if you have any information.

Query: I am searching for info on my husband’s great-grandmother, Nancy Anna Hunter, who was born May 16, 1854, we think in Georgia. She married Henry David Mobley and they later moved to Texas, where she died in 1934. We have no info on her parents other than the unproven info that her mother’s maiden name was Green. I thought I’d ask if anyone’s stumbled over any info our our Nancy Anna Hunter — the family lore is that she and her family were “Black Dutch”, which was another name used for Cherokee or other Indian heritage back then. We hope to confirm this only for the family history we’re working on, not to try to prove tribal links.

Query: I am looking for any information on my Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandfather, Jefferson RIDGE, a Cherokee from Arkansas. He was born about 1820 or earlier. According to family records, my Great-Great-Grandmother, Frances Jane Ridge Densmore (born in Sept.1842 in Missouri or Arkansas) and some of her siblings were kidnapped and sold into slavery. Frances Ridge found her parents after slavery ended in 1865. In my research, I have located a few names of other children of Jefferson Ridge: Margaret Davis, Ellis Sternam Densmore and Edmond Caldwell in Travis County, Texas, as well as, Frank Hannah in Greene County, Missouri. On the 1925 Oklahoma death certificate for Frances Densmore, her father is listed as Jefferson Ridge, a farmer in Arkansas and her mother, Corine King. Family members have described Corine King as a Black woman. I believe Corine King could have been an African. I would greatly appreciate any help in finding more information on my Cherokee ancestor, Jefferson RIDGE and his family.

Query: I am looking for any information on my Grandmother. Her name was Ocie Edith Elizabeth Evelyn White. She was born Oct. 4, 1903, I believe in Tennessee, possibly Monroe County and died Aug. 25, 1978 in Murphy NC. She married Homer Frady. Her father was Monroe White and mother was Sarah Ann Elizabeth Roper. Monroe’s father was Johnathon (Jonathon?) Monroe White who married Sarah Ann Givens. I can’t seem to find anything about Johnathon. I have nothing on his family. If anyone can help, I would be so grateful. I believe either Jonathon or Sarah Ann Givens is the Cherokee connection in this family. Thank you. Lavon Jawor
