Query: I was told by my grandmother who passed two years ago at the age of 96 that we were Cherokee on her dad’s side. Apparently his mother told her when she was ten making that about 1922. That GG Grandmother’s name was MARION ELIZABETH FLANDERS and was born about 1852 in Vermont, so I’m told. I think one searcher out there has her parents’ names and sibs, but then the line stops cold. We found a LYMAN FLANDERS on the Dawes Rolls, but it wasn’t my ggrandfather, Marion’s son. I am hoping this is true as it has been in our family line for the last century. My ggrandfather used to tell his kids to be proud of that blood, implying that it was seen to be shameful at the time. I do know that the location of Marion’s birth is suspect for Cherokee, but I do know that there are other Flanders who are Cherokees, so any help would be appreciated. Otherwise I am teaching my daughter the wrong language and traditions, lol!

Query: Joshua Winchester “Dock” GARRETT
Born: 20 March 1844
Died: 10 October 1925
His wives were:
Mary “Polly Ann” KIRK
Born: 12 November 1850
Died: 16 September 1886
Mary “Polly Sue” PATRICK
Born: 18 March 1868
Died: 26 January 1942
His parents were:
Joshua Bernard GARRETT
Born: 1805
Died: 1848
Nancy COPE
Born: 1805
Died: 1851
My question is about Joshua Winchester GARRETT. I have been told Joshua Winchester “Dock” GARRETT, was 1/2 Cherokee Indian. I have also been told, that Joshua’s 2nd wife, Mary “Polly Sue” PATRICK was full blooded Cherokee Indian. I don’t know, if Joshua’s 1st wife, Mary “Polly Sue” KIRK, was Cherokee Indian or not. I’m wondering, if Joshua Winchester “Dock” GARRETT is 1/2 Cherokee Indian, himself, then from which parent did he receive his Cherokee Indian blood? Was it from his father, Joshua Bernard GARRETT or from his mother, Nancy COPE? Joshua Winchester “Dock” GARRETT is my great-great-grandfather. Joshua Winchester “Dock” GARRETT to Bonza “Bonzie” Ethel GARRETT to (my grandmother- living) to Jerry Kenneth Arney to me. I want to learn, as much as I can, so, I’m just beginning in my family research, on this subject.

Query: I am searching for everything I can find out about Chief Big Feathers of eastern Tennessee in the early 1800s. I believe he was removed via the Trail of Tears in the late 1830s. I believe Kizzy (Madden/Maiden/Madding) of Virginia, born about 1790 was his wife. She was sent, I believe by Big Feathers with her children Hester, Jacob, and Champion into the Harlan County, Kentucky mountains to hide. That is where I find them in the 1860 census. I’d really love to know everything I can about Chief Big Feathers and his family.
