Query: Looking for any info on my g g possibly great grandfathers full blooded Cherokee wife. All we know are stories of his hiding out her, and many more Cherokee from having to leave the Jackson Co NC area. I can only give the last name of BISHOP for him, also guessing since illegal then, that this is why I can not find a Cherokee name time around late 1800’s early 1900’s. On Longbranch rd in Cullowhee NC there have been found burial grounds as well as pottery. So much so that it hindered a building project of WCU and now that part of the land is protected. Does anyone have any info that might help me find ALL of my roots?

Query: I was relinquished to the State of Arizona at age three and adopted to another family at age 5. As was the procedure then, my name was also legally changed. (I am fully aware of my name at birth, because I was not adopted until age 5.) In my “Non-Identifying Information” (from my adoption record) that is legally accessed after the age of 18, it states that my mother was “described as being 3/8 Cherokee”. In 1968, I was placed with a family in New York under the ARENA (Adoption Resource Exchange of North America) Program before finally being placed and adopted by a third family. The ARENA program was primarily created to specifically place Native American children with more affluent families in the eastern United States. (ARENA was the successor to the Indian Adoption Project. Well intentioned but poorly thought out, this program was abandoned in about 1973.) I am proud of this heritage but as an adopted child from a State with closed records and being told that my case record was likely destroyed due to mis-marking? cannot corroborate that with any official documentation. (The information sent to me came from various reports within the file of my adoptive parents.) I have long since re-connected with my biological family and am fortunate at their welcoming me with open arms. I know the names of my Great Grandparents, and am told that my Great Grandfather was “named George Washington SCOTT and was born in Oklahoma on a reservation”. I cannot find him there nor in any census that allows me to match him definitively without his date of birth. If I am eligible for membership in the Cherokee Nation or Eastern Band of Cherokee, I don’t know that I can prove anything past what I have listed here, and that may not be enough. I welcome comments and suggestions.
