Query: Scott and Simmons: Seeking information concerning father and mother of Julia Ann James Scott and Matilda Melissa Scott. Unknown if there was other siblings. Both born in the 1870’s. Father was half Cherokee, wore braids and spoke Cherokee. It is known they are buried in or near Independence County, Arkansas. Julia married William Monroe Kirkland in the 1890s and died approx. 1911. Matilda never married and died two or three years after Julia.
Also need information on William Henry Simmons, married Mattie Moore, born in 1860s, died in Independence County, Arkansas 1950s. He was reported half Cherokee. Both are great grandparents.

Family lore rumors that Mildred Travis was Cherokee and that she as once married to the local Chief, possibly Lofton Mitchell. I have searched the Dawes and Miller Rolls as well as Cherokee Roots Volume 2, the Western Cherokee Rolls with no success. I have read that tracing Cherokee Roots in Kentucky can be very difficult. They had Patton, John Armstrong J. b. 1846 d. 1926 who married Bailey, Frances Ann in Kentucky. They had Patton, Warren b.5/23/1876 d.5/16/1936 who married Eva Ellen Davis in Kentucky. Patton and Davis had my grandmother. Bailey and Davis were from Fleming County. My grandmother swears she remembers a picture of a small dark woman hanging on a bedroom wall and a long braid. When she asked about the picture and hair she was told “We don’t talk about her.” I was told she was called Annie. Who knows?

If the information I have been told is right I am at least 1/16th. My high school asked me for a role number last year. My grandfather kept trying to trace back through thr Rogers side and found family given names but no roll numbers. He told the story that we were related to Sam Houston’s Cherokee consort. Query: Charles Walker: Looking for information on Charles Walker b. 1893 in Jefferson County AL. He is supposed to be Cherokee (part Cherokee?). He married Lydia Mae Aaron b. 1898 in Walker County and they lived in Walker County until 1920’s when they moved to WV. I believe he was a coal miner.
Chester Woods: I am looking for information on my grandfathers family. Chester Harlan Woods was born 7 April 1907 in Harlan County KY to John H. Woods and Nancy Lively. John was reported to be Cherokee (part Cherokee). His parents died when he was about 5 and he was raised in KY by an aunt named Ellen. Chester died 22 July 1995 in Oak Hill WV. My grandfather also told me one that he met an older relative named “Earn” who outlived his parents. I think it was part of his fathers family. I believe Earn lived into his 80’s.
