Query: It is said that my children’s great great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee. I do not understand how this works (as far as lineage following the matriarchal line). This woman was my husband’s great grandmother on his mother’s side. This Cherokee woman was my mother-in-law’s paternal grandmother. So, the lineage would go from this woman to her son to his daughter to her son to my daughters! I do not know the name of this Cherokee woman- I do know that her son’s name was George Henry Jackson who lived in White Horse, Virginia. I do not know of any of this to be written information- it’s been verbally passed down through the years. Does the lineage have to follow an entire female line for my children to be considered Cherokee? What blood line does one have to have to be considered Cherokee?

Query: My sister and I are searching for information on our maternal great grandmother, Susan Field, who married David W. Covington sometime around 1880, possibly in Kentucky. They settled in or near Bolivar, Missouri, where my great grandfather supplied horses to the U.S. Army. My father, Don E. Williams, thought that his grandmother had not learned to read until after she married Mr. Covington, and he thought that may have indicated she was a full-blood. He also thought she may have been Cherokee. My great-uncle, Barnett Eugene Covington refused to discuss the past with my uncle, when asked to do so. If anyone knows how I might farther pursue this quest, I would be greatful for information. I do have a coverlet passed down to my sisters and me from the Field side which has been indentified at the Maxwell Museum of Natural (UNM) as an Anglo-Irish pattern, “Winter-Summer,” which was woven on a four-harness loom. The anthropologist who identified it said it was most likely made prior to 1830, when that pattern went out of style. So it is quite possible that my great grandmother was part Scots-Irish, as were most of my ancestors on both my father’s and mother’s sides.

Query: I am searching for the ancestry of my grandmother, Nancy Elizabeth Duvall. She was born Nov. 13, 1892 died October, 1984. No one knows her mother’s name, although it is believed that her grandmother was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian who may have married a black man. Her mother, subsequently, from what I remember hearing as a child, also married a black man. Nancy Elizabeth’s father was Frank Duvall, and Nancy married a black man by the name of Mack? Monteque? Edmondson who was a minister. M. Edmondson and Nancy Elizabeth produced seven children: Florence, George Washington, Lula, Charles, Joseph, and Anna Mae. It is said that Nancy’s people were from Pulaski, Tenn., but she and Mack Edmondson lived in KY. Mack died about 1935. Please, if anyone out there has any information on this geneology, please email me.
