Query: My son is a quarter Cherokee Indian. His dad’s father was white and mother was Cherokee. My son’s dad was adopted by white parents at 9 months old. My son now 24 has asked me about finding out about his heritage, but his dad would not deal with while we were married and abandoned us when my son was 3 years old. I do not know where start. People use to come down hard on me for not checking into my son’s family history because there is money available for education as I understand. But things were difficult and I really did not want to deal with it at the time. My son has worked since he was young. He has achieved amazing things without a college education. He looks show his heritage clearly. If he does not have help he will be fine (he is a high acheiver). But if funds are available I do not see why he should not be able to avail himself of this like anyone else in his position. In doing this search today I have seen articles about fraud in this area. I look to clearly find my son’s true heritage. Not just for finanical reasons but for possible future health reasons that are now a blank slate for my son from his dads side of the family. Sorry this is long. I truly do not know where to begin with this.

Query: I am searching for info on Martha Combs. This is how family story goes: “A man from Mississippi was on a horse buying trip in Kentucky. He saw a Cherokee woman on the auction block being sold as a slave. He bought her and brought her home to Ms. After his wife died, he took her as his mistress and had two children by her.” I have surname of man from Ms. and the childrens names and birth dates. Any one who could help me research this is an ANGEL. I’m researching it for one of the descendants I have met through my own family research. I’m interested to find out if my ancestor was the buyer of this Cherokee woman also.

Query: I am looking for any information on a Temperance CATES who is Cherokee Indian, born in Franklin Co. Tn. Jan. 10,1817. She married James BRIXEY abt. 1829. in Coffee Co. Tn. She was supposed to have been removed from the Indian Rolls because she married out of her race. Is this possible? She appears to have been only 12 yrs. old when she married. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Query: Our “Bunch” family has Melungeon/Cherokee and probably Saponi roots. I have some old pictures that I’d like some help with. One in particular is what I think is an old Cherokee house – at least it looks very close to the one in Tahlequah built as a replica at the heritage center. This picture was taken in the late 1800s. Our immediate family did not go west during the removals so we believe the house was in KY or TN. No one seems to know exactly where this photo was taken. I’m hoping another similar photo exists somewhere or maybe someone might recognize it. Our family can be traced back to the Powell Valley/Clinch River areas of VA/NC/TN and then into the Indian lands of Tennessee during the time Ft. Blackmore was constructed. From theree they migrate north into south-eastern KY around Albany. After that, many stayed but some went on to Indiana and Missouri. What’s funny is that the same folks that lived in KY and moved on to IN were enumerated as white in KY and Mulatto in IN. I’ve been told that this is because county funds were established based on the number of whites so there was some gaming of the statistics. Would the Cherokees that were given land to stay or those that simply hid to avoid removal have contunued to live in the old-style houses? I’ve heard that when the Cherokees were removed many homes were moved into by whoever received their land. Our family has a secret past that the elders would not talk about and they are all gone now so we are left with only bits and pieces of our lineage. I have a web page that provides additional detail including some of photos: http://www.home.earthlink.net/~ogemah/index.htm There is a photo of that old house is on the web site.
