Query: My husband believes that his great grandmother was Cherokee (that is what his mother, who is still living, says). We know from census records and his mother that she was called Ella, but her death certificate says Ellen:
Kentucky Death Records
Last Name First Name MI Age Death Place Residence Death Date Volume Certificate Death Volume
MATTOX ELLEN 073 HARRISON 11-09-1932 052 25826 1932
This means of course that she was born about 1859. We have no idea what her tribal name was, but she married Joseph M. Mattox, probably in or near Harrison County, Kentucky where she lived the remainder of her life, about 1883. She died Nov. 9, 1932 according to her death certificate. Does anyone know any more about her?

Query: My 4+ great grandfather is buried in an old indian burial graveyard in Fayette, County Alabama. To my knowledge my grandfather was not an American Indian. All family records tell the same story that Charles Daniel Lucas is buried in an Old Indian grave yard on the old “Mince Hughes” place. There are 10 Indians buried there. My grandfather has a marker and people who have been there tell me that there is evidence of other graves. My question is why isn’t this area marked as historic so it can be protected. How can I go about finding out “who” all is buried there and “why” my grandfather was buried there? I have tried to find out about American Indians in Fayette County, Alabama but have come up with nothing.

Can anyone help me find out who they were? Some of my ancestors were as follows: James A. HAYS, whom we believe might have been part Cherokee, married Sarah Jane KAYS, who could have also been part Cherokee; they married in 1876 in Franklin County, IL. James’ parents were James A. and Nancy HAYS. Sarah’s parents were Washington D. KAYS, born in KY about 1816, and Elizabeth (maybe Lizzie) RODGERS, born about 1816. This Elizabeth (maybe Lizzie) KAYS might have been on the Trail of Tears.

Query: My ggrandfather’s name was Joseph Chatman JACKSON, he was born in IL, his father TN and mother Kentucky. He was Cherokee, but parents were killed when he was young. He was old enough to know his last name, but not his parents first names. He may have had a brother named James, but all of the older relatives have passed on, so there is no one to ask. However, I was wondering if there would be any family that might be searching from the other end for this misssing part of their family. My dad was very proud of his Cherokee heritage, (even before it became popular). We have some pictures of him as a grown man. He was a very intelligent man, black hair, brown eyes and brown skin, small of stature. Any information would be wonderful.

Query: Now and then I have done some research on my Dad’s side of the family regarding Cherokee or American Indian bloodlines. The surnames I’ve looked into are JOHNS and GARRISON in particular. John B JOHNS born in 1815 and his wife Phebe GARRISON born in 1816, both born in Ohio, died in Illinois, buried in Lyman cemetary. My husband’s mother has also told him that her father was Cherokee Indian and Pennsyvania Dutch but he died in the 30s when he was in his 50s and she had no details on his family except names of siblings one of whom was Eleanor. His name was Raymond EARLE/EARL. His kids birth certificates say EARLE but for some reason the E was dropped later as in my mother-in-law who went by EARL. Raymond was born in New Jersey and married Edna KASTNER. If anyone is interested in this info (have few tidbits at home) or has other info, please contact me.
