Query: I really have what I think is a simple question, but I can’t find the answer. If a family was definately Cherokee BB, and their children were born in Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation, and they lived there their whole lives (born there) – after the Dawes Rolls, does that mean that they or their family ARE on the Dawes roll? Were the Cherokee who refused to sign, or chose not too, or even rejected, allowed to stay in the Indian Territory anyway, or did they have to leave? What if they were on the Miller Roll (or any other roll), and not Dawes? Were they allowed to stay? … confused.

Query: My great grandmother was born in 1855 in Washington Co., Ark. to James and Ellendor SIMPKINS. Her name was Catherine Elmira SIMPKINS. She is listed with both parents in 1855, but by 1860 her mother was a widow. Between 1860 and 1865 her mother disappears from the census. My grandmother next shows up as Elmira WATKINS in Crawford Co, Ark. We believe when her mother died she went to live with either an aunt or sister who was married to a WATKINS. Elmire had been called Cathy and since there must have been another Cathy in the family they changed her to Myra. Also since she was so young (between 7 and 10) gave her the Watkins name. She shows up in the early 1870’s as Elmira Watkins. She married my great grandfather William Anderson BOWLES (or Boles) and they lived in Prairie Grove, Ark (Wash. Co). If anyone has any informatin on these missing years and why the name change, I would be very interested.
