Query: I was told by my late father-in-law that his ggggmother was an adopted Cherokee child around 1833 in Georgia. The adopting parents were Jeremiah and Annis (Howard) Nix. The childs name then was Amy Nix. Jeremiah and Annis married in Hall County, Georgia. 9/30/1830. Amy Nix married Felix Cary Bright in Murray County, Georgia. on 6/28/1859. Felix died 5/25/1864 in New Hope Church, Georgia. Amy and her children came to Texas. Children were: George Washington Bright born 1860, Thomas M Bright and Victoria Bright. Amy died 4/25/1904 and is buried in Waco, Tx. Does this link to anybody?

Query: I am trying to trace my Cherokee heritage. I only have a very little information and I am not even sure that the information is correct. My ggrandmother was said to be full blooded Cherokee Indian. Her name was Annie Haire and was said to be from Temperhill, NC. She married a man by the name of Joe Kelley (Kelly) who apparently took the name of Glass. I am not sure if he took the new name before they were married or not. He was from Babcock, GA. They had eight children most of which I assume lived in GA. If anyone can shed some light on any of this information or if anyone knows where I can begin to look, please write me and let me know.

Query: I have heard all my life, that my 5th. great grandfather was called Chief Randolph/Randolf. I have no knowledge of the tribe, he was from. This was on my mothers side of the family, her grandmother was Charlotte Parker Cheney, she was born in Ohio, her great grandmother, remembered being kidnapped from somewhere far away, by an ocean, and brought on a ship to this country. She was traded to an Indian tribe and ended up married to this Chief Randolph/Randolf. So far I can’t find out who her parents and grandparents were. Does anyone out there know of a story like this or have any of you heard of a Chief Randolph/Randolf, I know this is what the english called him, or of an indian name for him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Query: Stephen A.D. Perrin married a Cherokee woman, Mahaley Childers, a widow, about 1902. The 1910 census in Wagoner Co., Okla., shows Mahaley is the mother of two children, one living (Amas Childers). I would like to know the date and place of her marriage to Perrin. Query: I am searching for information on Malinda Ann Samson. Putnam was her married name. She was born in Georgia Nov. 15, 1839. She married Joel Allen Putnam in Saint Clair CO, Alabama on March 6,1864. She died in Caddo CO. Oklahoma on Feb. 27,1913. Her body was returned to Saint Clair Co. for burial. Query: Trying to find ancestors of my grandfather (b 1899-d 1971), Samuel Aaron Still, Blackville, SC. I have always been told by my father (who died about ten years ago) that there were Cherokee ancestors on his side, but his family would never discuss it (sadly, this was not unusual). There are many Stills on the Dawes, Guion-Miller, and Full Blood Rolls, but I am unable to trace back this far without more info on my grandfather. I also understand that both his parents were Stills – cousins often married. Also, many Native Americans also took “English names,” along with their original tribal name. Any help would be appreciated, and I will share what I have.

Query: Any info on Joel Eaton and Elizabeth Hart Eaton from Lincoln County, Tennessee. His parents were John and Elizabeth Marsh Eaton. Joel and Elizabeth’s children were John Calvin, Nancy, Samuel Hart, Joel, George, and Alfred. Also their son George Eaton’s (my great-great-grandfather) family who came to Rusk County Texas where he married Tempy Ann Cooper. Query: My great great grandmother was full Cherokee. I am trying to trace some history. These are the names I have: Leonard Reynolds born 9-17-1856 and died 9-2-1908, Algie E. Reynolds born 12-4-1867 and died 11-9-1924. My grandmother was Ollie Mae Reynolds born 8-4-1897 in Hornbeck, La. She die 2-18-78 in Natchitoches, La. She was married to Jesse Breedlove. I got this information from an old family bible. There was a story that my great, great, great grandmother really was an Indian princess rescued from drowning by a trapper from New York who turned out to have Apache ancestry. As usually happens, by the time I became old enough to be interested and ask questions, there were few left to ask and not much information available.

Query: Looking for any information regarding my great grandparents who were pure Cherokee Indian. They resided at the Cherokee Indian Reservation located in NC and had 2 children my grandmother Laura Bell Hardy and French Hardy. My grandma was born and raised at the Reservation until she moved to Richlands Virginia. She also married my grandfather Tom Hess and they had 14 children. My grandfather died around 1948 and my grandmother died around 1973 in Richlands Virginia. My great grandparent’s Hardy left the Reservation and moved to Pocahontas West Virginia where they passed away between 1935 and 1948. Great grandma Hardy was between the age of 103 or 107 and great grandpa Hardy was in his late 90’s or early 100’s. Any information regarding my family would be greatly honored and appreciated. Due to lack of dates and first names of my great grandparents am not able to find information regarding them.

Query: I am looking for any information on the Holmes from Oklahoma, I know that my ancestors were Cherokee, I just don’t know how to find them. Query: After lots of serching, I have gotten stuck at the name Martha Ball Austin, a full-blood Cherokee. She was my ggggrandmother on my grandfathers side. Query: I am looking for information on my g-grandfather John W. Brown. He went by the names, John Wiley Brown, John Wesley Brown, Jack Warren, and William Brown. I do not know whether he was all or part Cherokee. He was born about 1864. He married Alsena Snoody and they had one child, William Snoddy Brown Cowger b. May 9, 1895 in Dyer, Tenn. They moved to Ark. and divorced. Mr. Brown then moved on to Texas and California. His second wife was Josephine Baecht with whom he had several daughters. Query: I believe my gggggrandmother (Nancy Panter) may have been married to a Cherokee Indian. She appeared in the Rutherford County NC censuses from 1820 to 1850 as head of household with a total of five children yet no male was indicated as her spouse. I have been told that if she had been married to a Cherokee, he would have been forbidden by NC law to list himself as head of the household. Is there anyone who can verify this information? Additionally, there are no records demonstrating that these children were illegimate as defined by the NC bastardy laws nor records that they were adopted by Nancy Panter.

Query: I am just starting my search. I believe my grandmother, Goldie A Shepard, is half Cherokee. She was born in Lawrence County, Indiana on Nov. 13, 1901. Her parents were Inath Wolfe, born in Sailor Springs, Illinois on Aug. 1, 1884, and Oscar W. Shepard. The Cherokee is from the Wolfe side. Inath’s father was Mordica Alexander Wolfe. Can anyone help? Query: I received information that I had a great aunt that burned all of our tribal paperwork, due to the purchase of the land that a race track is located in Kentucky. I would like to get information about my heritage so that my family can be recognized for the people that we truly are. The only name that I have for a link is the last name of Wilson. I do not have much other information since my grandfather is deceased and all his brothers and sisters have also died. Query: I am looking for any information on Jemima McRae and Harriet Tyler. I’m not sure if Jemima McRae is my ancestor or not, but I know Harriet Tyler is. Jemima is supposed to be full blooded Cherokee and Harriet is supposed to be 1/2 and 1/2 Cherokee and Creek. My Jemima’s son was Noah Taylor, and that’s all the information I have on her, except she was born in 1805 and died after 1900. Harriet married Daniel Neil Halstead in Gray, Jones County, Ga. Query: I am trying to compile a family tree for my children. I am looking for information on my g-grandmother Julia Hollingsworth, also known as Julianne or Chully. She was born July 18, 1889 and died in 1946 or 1947. She married Robert Lee Lipscomb on December 25, 1907. I have found the name G.A. Hollingsworth in her bible and believe this may be her father. The name may have been George Asbury. This is just speculation because my grandfather, her youngest son, was named George Asbury Lipscomb. The G.A. Lipscomb died January 25, 1940. I was told that one of Julia’s parents was full Cherokee and the other was part Cherokee, though no one is sure which was which. There was also two sisters, Mamae and Nannie (not sure of the spellings). Julia had five children by Robert Lipscomb, Carmen Lee, Robert Burns, Ruth R., James E., and George Asbury. Originally, Julia was from North Carolina, but later moved to Georgia, I belive around Bartow County.

Query: My greatgrandmothers name was Lullu Reynolds, the adults called her Harriet I think. I would like my daughter to know of her heritage on my side of the family (she is 1/2 Salish-Kootenai on her moms side). My information of her is almost none, (not many whites were proud to be known as having Indian blood, (my Dad passed as Italian so he could buy liqour). Query: I am looking for any evidence of my heritage. I was told that on my fathers side his grandmother who was Native American was sold into slavery at the age of 5 in Frankfort, Ky and bought by a man who had the last name of Sanders I think. My great-grandmother was named Pearl. She married an ex-slave that was half white and half black by the name of Jim Todd. I have been told all of my life that I am part Cherokee. But since slavery and most of the elders have past on, I am having trouble in starting this process. Most of my people are from Tenn, Indiana and KY.

Query: I am trying to find a woman named Betty Jane Smith. She was my father’s first wife at the time time of WWII. His name is Louis Istre. He was at sea when their child was born. She was born 3/12/44. She was born in Oregon, and raised by her grandmother ’till Louis came home from the war. Betty is part Cherokee and we found her picture in a book called “End of the Trail”. Two daughters Effie May born 1897 married Saul Macklehannon (was Pinkerton detective on railroad), Sybil Ilene born 1901, married Eugene Beechman. Sam had a blacksmith shop and sold Dodge wagons in Craig, Co. until he became ill then moved to Arizona to live with one of his daughters no sure which one. We think around Globe. Sam’s grandfather had a farm in Tenn. as they were taken from their home he was killed. Grandmother walked the Trail of Tears. I was told she gave birth on the way to Oklahoma, we believe it was a girl not sure.

Query: My g.g.g. grandfather, James Burton, married a Caty Troxell in 1805. I am sure she was Cherokee Indian. I think that he died in 1816-1817. She remarried to a Mr. Gill in 1817. My g.g.grandfather Joseph R. Burton served as a scout for the Union Army scouting on General Zollicopher’s Southern forces in Northern TN. Does anyone have any knowledge of this Caty Troxell? Query: William Jesse Grimes: I was told by my aunt he was born 8/15/1909 and died 2/26/1935 in Calvin, Virginia and went by Jesse. John Bell was his father and was adopted by the Grimes family. I was told that adoption papers were not used this early. Sarah Ida Grimes was his wife and was born 7/31/1910 and remarried as Tester, Sarah Ida and died 7/2/1975. Charlie Grimes was also the son of John Bell/Grimes.

Query: Looking for Native American (Cherokee?) roots. Ggrandfather, David W. Work mrd Martha Mckinney (date unknown). Their children: Lola B. Work Pryor b 1/15/1882; Charlie W. Work b 4/16/1875; David W. Work b 8/1/1886; Belle Work; Lillie Work; Lonnie (or Lonie) Work – my grandfather. Unable to locate on Dawes Roll. However, other Work names are listed – perhaps relatives. Unable to locate them on Eastern rolls. David had a brother named John Work, who also had a daughter named Lola who lived in Oregon. My mother, Ollie Mae, used the maiden name of Works, but her half-brother insists the name is Work. David W. Work (D. W. Work) listed on the 1880 census for Bell County, TX (haven’t gotten to the library yet to get a copy). Any information on David W. Work, his parents, children, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Query: It has been passed down in my family that my ggrandmother, Kizzie Cantrell Martin was Cherokee. We have nothing to go on but hear say. She was born in Tennessee in 1850 and died in Memphis, Texas in 1926. She could not read or write and signed her name with an X. She married Leonard Charles Martin. They had six children: Mary, Tennie Mae, Sally, Richard, Lewis and W.T. They lived several years in Lamar County, Texas. If anyone has a link to our family, please contact me.

Query: I supposedly have Cherokee and/or Blackfoot heritage on both sides of my family. According to my mother she had a grandmother (don’t know how many “greats” are in front of it) who was a Cherokee princess. I know my maternal grandparents names and d.o.b.’s. They are William Woodrow Bowser born 1/26/1921 or 1922 in Rome, GA. and Elaine Mary Pallardy born 12/01/21. I do not know where she was born. My great grandparents on her side were Alice Fritz and Joseph Pallardy.
