Query: Reference to Cynthia query for Cartwright. My ggrandmother was Mary Elizabeth Marcum, daughter of Margaret (Cartwright) and George Marcum. Margaret Cartwright b.1832, d. 1872, daughter of (Cherokee) John who married Ruhemma Cartwright. John and Ruhemma Cartwright may have had sons (surname Cartwright) Only a possiblity that Cartwright descendants may have been partial to the Indian background and adopted a Cherokee. My Cherokee “Cartwright” connection with Mary Marcum is centered in IL. I estimate “John” may have been born in the early 1800’s. Your mention of Cherokee, and Indiana and Cartwright is rare enough to warrant closer look. Sorry I can’t add more for you.

Query: My wife is the genealogist, so please bear with me. We are tracing her family, and have hit a dead end. All confirming data has us back to a supposedly fullblooded Cherokee woman, Juriah Day. b. c 1799, in Virginia. d. Before 1860, Howell c./Douglass Co. MO. m. Collins, David, 1/11/1822, Knox Co. KY (Barborville). Children: Ruhaney Collins (F) 10/20/1822, Daniel Collins (M) c. 1825, Aaron Collins (M) c. 1828, Leonard H. (Toady) Collins (M) c. 1831. Every thing up to to this person is documented, and claimed to be of the Saponi Nation. However, family history says she was fullblooded Cherokee. I found her on an “all things Cherokee” site, an downloaded a file that I believe may be one of the “rolls” but may be the researchers file data I cannot find that page again, and when I tried emailing the party it was returned as “undeliverable” I would like to surprise her with the stile over that stone wall.

Query: My gggggrandmother was Annie Taylor Townsend wife of Edward Townsend, Sr, daughter of Ruthy West and Chief Fox Taylor, or so I have been told. I am trying to prove this and I need information to do so. In Cherokee By Blood Vol.#4 my gggggrand mother and her mother are both discussed. On page 274 it states that Henry Jackson Holcomb does not know the name of the parents of his said grandmother, Annie Townsend, except that her surname was Taylor and does not know where they were living in 1835. The exceptors state that Ruthy Taylor and Annie Taylor Townsend were full blood Cherokee Indians. The roll of 1835 shows that Ruthy Taylor there enrolled was half blood. If anyone can help me out on this I would really appreciate it. I would especially like to know if Chief Fox Taylor was Annie’s father.

Query: Family names: Waitman, Rice, Rowin, Poindexter.
My grandad is Albert Porter Waitman and he is 95 years old. He has said for years that his mother always told them that they were Indian but they couldn’t tell anyone. I know this happened alot with this period of time. I always thought that we were problably Choctaw or Chickasaw because we live in southeastern Oklahoma. He told me the other day that his mother said they were Cherokee. We don’t know much about my grandad’s family. His father died when he was 6 and his name was Samuel James Waitman. His mother said it was on her side, her name was America (Mary) Frances Rice. She was the daughter of William. Nancy (Poindexter) Rice. We believe that William was born in Illinois and Nancy in Kentucky. William’s parents were John and Ann (Rowin) Rice. John was supposedly born in Virginia. John and Ann were married in Vermillion Co. Ill. on March 25, 1830. My grandad was born in Grayson Co. Texas in 1906. He was told by his mother that her family had come to Texas in a covered wagon sometime after the war. They supposedly came from Missouri. We have also be asked about being related to the outlaw Red Buck Waightman. I have meet with another Waitman family around Ok. City that also believe the same thing. We think that we are related because of a common connection. Any help would be appreciated.

For some reason, perhaps distance from her home in AL, this was never done. Does any of this story ring a bell?

Query: I am in serarch of my Cherokee roots. I am unable to locate any information on my great-grandfather, John Damon Shephard (spelling may be different). I believe he was a full blood Cherokee. When he married my great-grandmother, Hallie Jane Garner, in February 1888, he was 29 years old. I recently found a Cherokee Census Roll of 1880 which shows John Sheppard, #1267, N. Cher, 21, M, Canadian, page 36. Is there a way to locate information on this John Sheppard? The only information I have on his is who his children are, my grandmother who is his youngest child. She was born April 10, 1898 and was living with her maternal grandmother fro the 1900 census. I am assuming John Sheppard and his wife, Hallie were both dead when that census was done. The other daughters were scattered with other relatives and others in the area. Please let me know if there is any where I can find help for my research. John was married prior to Hallie and had a daughter, Neal born July 10, 1884, from that marriage. Together they had, Hattie, b 1-20-1887; Pearl, b 5-17-1889; Artie, b 5-1-1892, Lou, b unknown; Elva Ruth, b 4-10-1898. I have found cemetery records showing an infant son, with no date for birth or death. They lived in Logan County, Arkansas, their marriage license shows Chismville as their residence. My grandmother and my mother were born in Booneville, Arkansas. My mother just passed away last month at the age of 78, I have hoped to be able to find some of the answers to our roots before her passing. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Query: I am looking for information on my great-great grandmother. A family member has proof that she was a Cherokee indian princess her name was Morning Dawn her name at death according to a newspaper was Mrs. Laura Fugate (possibly Feugate) Shaw. She died in Picher, (Minden resident ?) Oklahoma, in March 12, 1942. She had 9 children by a Jerry Fugate a miner who died in Arma, Kansas. With his son William Feugate present by his side at the time of death he died in 1921. She remarried a Charlie L. Shaw after his death and she died his wife. I know her son Jessie Feugate of Pittsburg, Kansas later travelled and provided proof of his indian heritage and obtained money owed him instead of his land. That is not my purpose here merely to trace my family roots and hope somewhere down the line a world of adventure has fallen in my family ancestors somehow. I am short on patience with the family members who possess all the proof of my rightful roots that refuse to speak or share them with me…they don’t even know me at all. Hopefully this information will circulate amongst the Native Cherokee Tribes and someone will know of my grandmother Morning Dawn and can tell me something about her…many many thanks.

Query: I am trying to find records and any information about my late great-grandmother. Her married name was Miriam Booher. Her husband was Herman Booher. Miriam is told to be full blooded Cherokee, but I can not verify this as of yet. I have one photo of her, she looks to be full blooded as all family history has been told. There is another photo I am getting a copy of of both Miriam and her husband, Herman Booher. I can provide an e-mail immediately of Miriam that I have, and the e-mail address of my cousin who has the other copy. I have one photo of their son Henry Mitchell Booher also to share. Miriam is thought to have the maiden name of Mitchell, but have not been able to confirm this. I have found with family help, that Henry Mitchell Booher was born in Sulivan Co., Tennessee on July 07, 1885. He died about 1930 in Maryland where he had lived in several counties. On September 04, 1902, he married Marian Ruth Lovett (not sure of her name, records show many variants of her name). She was born Sept 1885 and died around 1930 after her husbands death. Their children where orphaned. I have their names and more information. Miriam was alive sometime between 1923 until 1930 because my father clearly remebered her living with them on the family tobacco farm. He was the youngest of the children, and was 6 yrs. old when his parents died. My father and all his siblings have past, but all said Miriam was full blooded, their father Henry half. Would appreciate any help. I could not find her on the Dawes Roll, but found Mitchell listed. No Booher’s were mentioned on this list. I do not believe she had to relocate during the Trail of Tears because of her marriage to a white man. I do know that I recently found out my father lived near relatives in the 1940’s in Oklahoma. No one alive knows of this, but I found a note of it in my father’s notes referring to this. Perhaps he was with relocated family? With share Miriams photo with anyone who wishes to try to identify her.
