Query: I am seeking information on my maternal grandmothers parentage. All she was able learn over 76 years is this: She does not know her birth name nor the names of her parents, heard one story of a native american mother and Caucasion father, another story involving murder of mother and outlaw father. Neither have panned out thus far. She was raised from 3 yo to 14 yo by the Darnell family in Oklahoma (guthrie?) was told she was a servant. An older native American woman “an old indian woman” came to the house one day at age 5 walked up to my grandmother and told her that her name was Lenore and nothing else. She did not know birth date so she gave picked the date 10/11/1912 so that she could remember it and she said that libra was what she thought herself to be. Old man Darnell molested her (probably entire childhood) she ran away at 14 and never looked back – she does remember one of the “sons” Joseph was kind to her he was probably 15-20 years older than her. (possible birth-father?) Where should I start, I have looked into the “stories” not much there, I have researched a small amount on the Darnell Family nothing much found. Looked into orphanages-but with no dates, names etc.. did not get far, doubt a legal adotpion took place, would the government apprentice out a servant at age of 3? Any guidance you can give will be great appreciated and welcome. Both my mother and myself have not gotten any further than my grandmother did (spent all her money after my grandfather passed away on looking, came up with possible name Gussie Blankenship (poss orphaned/abandoned girl) and last name of Baer. HElP! Thanks I think that is it.

Query: I am very excited to have found this forum! I have been researching family history for a couple of years now. Have hit a wall – my great grandmother, Martha Barbee born in AK 1883. Her parents: S.W. Barbee (TN 1847) and Josaphine (NC 1860). The records stop with the 1900 census. Siblings of Martha: Ollie V (born 1889 Choctaw Nat) and McClellan (born 1894 Cherokee Nat). 1910 census lists additional siblings Ed, Virr (? spelling) as well as nieces/neph Jim, William,Rina, Adros (? spelling) all born in OK between 1902-1909. In addition, McClellan’s name is changed to George B. on 1910 record. One of Martha’s own children, Gertrude Carey is listed on 1910 census b. 1903 Indian Territory.
I am confused because at the time of the 1900 & 1910 Census’ they were in Scott County Lewis twp. AK, yet some of the children were born as stated above. Oral history has it that we are Cherokee through my grandmother’s line. I am trying to confirm. Any help, comments, information is considered a major blessing.
