Charlotte Stout
Query: My name is Charlotte STOUT, and I was born 7/25/66. I am interested in trying to nail down some of my heritage … my father was ‘officially’ listed as 25% Cherokee, with HIS mother (my grandmother) was ‘officially’ listed as 1/2 Cherokee, with HER father (my great-grandfather) as ‘black Dutch’ (which is also Cherokee, if I’m not mistaken) and HER mother (my great-grandmother) being full-blooded (with a race # if I’m not mistaken, but Charles’s stepsister has those records, and is not allowing Charles’s children – including myself – to receive the originals or copies of said document).
There is the issue of my father’s father being ‘unknown’, which wasn’t the case, as it was a secret which my grandmother took to her grave – the rumor is that she was assaulted by one of her maternal uncles (also full-blooded), and, well, it just becomes a big ol mess … let’s just say that I am being led to believe that (should the rumor be true) I stand to be anywhere from 37% (if Savannah was only 1/2 Cherokee) to 50% Cherokee (if Savannah was full-blooded), though only DNA testing would confirm this, and the official Cherokee nation does not recognize DNA testing as ‘proof of heritage’. Anyhow, here are the names I know:
Father: Charles Edward STOUT (born 7/30-something), in OK
His mother/my grandmother: Savannah STOUT, also born in OK
I do think that Savannah’s father was ‘Sam STOUT‘, but I’m not sure. As I’d mentioned earlier, I do believe he listed himself as ‘Black Dutch’.
Both Savannah and Charles died when they were 56 years of age (let’s hope I beat that curse!)
