Query: Anedotal infromation and old family pictures regarding Cherokee background. Want stronger evidence. Mother’s paternal grandmother that she never met was Lula HOWELL born 1887, Arkansas, Lula’s; parents were from Georgia father was born 1848 and mother 1862 possibly Oglethorpe County. Have pictures showing strong Native American presence. Mother’s maternal great grandmother died before her birth; N. CUMBY/CUMBY, possible first name Nekia, Nettie, Nidi. My great grandmother said her mom was full- blood Cherokee who married an Irish railroad track builder both died young as no known death records. Reportedly, my Great Grand born in Northern Louisiana- she lived in LA as a mature adult and I grew up in CT so lost great opportunities for info- and married great granddad African American before 1900 in Louisiana and she was likely 14 or 15. My father’s people are descendant’s of Linn BOYD a Ky US legislator, briefly speaker of the house during 1850’s and elected Lt governor of KY, died 1868. He had a son by family slave, Felix BOYD, whom L BOYD freed before emancipation. As the story is told: Felix married a local full blood Cherokee woman, Martha and remained in Trigg/Christian county. In 1906 my great grandmother Betty, now in middle Tn, whom I do not remember. filed and it appears was granted compensation on the Kerwin-Miller Rolls as an Eastern Cherokee. She had a sister Mary and her decendants whom I know only from afar also carry the family resemblence. Although, we call ourselves African American, it appears we are more Native American; coroner put white as race on my grandmother’s death certificate until I corrected it. Growing up other children often said I was not “all” African American because I looked “Indian”. Looking for more documentations and family with stronger Cherokee ties to fill the blanks as documents were lost/destroyed or in a relatives old garage in boxes.

Query: Do any researchers on the Cherokee know of a Bio. or other document listing the family members of John BROWN who was elected Chief of the Western Cherokee in 1839. There was a problem and evidently a blood feud among the Cherokee at that time and John headed to Texas and Mexico with a group. There was a note left in a BROWN Family Bible that stated my Ancestor was the son of the Western Cherokee Chief mentioned above. I am trying to confirm what is in the Bible note or reject it. My Ancestor was married to Elnora VANCLEVE and is listed on an 1860 Texas Census. Any help would be appreciated.

Jerald Cumbus
Query: John RILEY CUMBUS (1831-1903). My ancestor shows up on a farm with an unrelated elderly couple in the 1850 census. He doesn’t appear in any records before then. It is clear from later census records that he was illiterate, so the spelling of the last name was most likely arbitrary. It could be COMBS, COMBES, CUMBIS, CUMBA, COOMBES, or some other variation. Due to the timing and the dead end that I have reached with my direct ancestor, it may be that he was a half-breed child who may have escaped the removal. From our y-DNA testing, we know that at least the male line is European. With RILEY and COOMBES being roll names, I can’t help but wonder if he could have Cherokee, or other civilized tribe lineage.

Query: I hope you can help me find my “American Indian” ancestry though my PRUITT line. I am descended from Christopher Samuel PRUITT (born April 14, 1905 in Brent, Sequoyah County, Cherokee Indian Territory). All my life I heard Christopher say that he was “Indian” but he didn’t know if the tribe was Cherokee or another tribe. He isn’t listed on the Dawes Roll. Family oral information claims he got his “Indian blood” through his father (Cherokee?) and/or his mother (Cherokee or other?). Christopher’s parents are John James PRUITT (born in Missouri about 1873) and Emma Eveyline SKIDMORE (born September 1881 in Arkansas). John’s parents are Christopher Columbus PRUITT/PRUET/PREWITT [sp?] (born 1841 in Bath, Tennessee) and Missouri Ann JOHNSON (born March 1, 1847 in Missouri). John’s siblings are: George William (born 1869), Mary Margaret (born 1870), Elijah J (born 1871), Sarah Jane (born 1876), Ida May (born 1879), Emma (born 1881) and Sarilda/Surilda (born 1883). Emma’s parents are James S. SKIDMORE (born December 1859 in Jasper County, Indiana) and Sarah H. [Hannah?] ALBERTSON (born March 1, 1860 in Hamilton County, Indiana). Nixon W [White?] ALBERTSON (born December 10, 1834 in Dublin, Wayne County, Indiana) and Amanda J. JEFFRIES (born abt 1831 in Indiana). I have found in my research that the surname JEFFRIES (in Indiana) may be Catawba.
