Query: Family tradition says that my grandfather, James Albert Aldridge, was 1/16th Cherokee, which would make his great grandmother full-blooded Cherokee. Unfortunately, he was out of the family picture by 1916, so we don’t know anything other than that he was born in Oklahoma. Familiar?

Query: I am looking for my great grandfather, William Shewmate. born in 1859 died Dec. 1967 in McKinney TX. He was married to Martha Ann Savage who died in 1892. There daughter Nara Elizabeth Shewmate (could be Shewmake) was born 10 May 1889 in Seymaur, Bayler Co. Texas and died 11 Sept 1957 in Denver Col. She was only 3 years old when her mother died and she was passed from family to family within the tribe. She married Thomas Marion Jones around 1909, this was her second marrage. Her first husband/marrage was short. Thomas M.Jones died in 1933 and my grandmother Nara remarried soon after.

Query: I am stuck on this one ancestor. There has probably been an attempt to cover up the truth regarding this man. These people lived in Louisa County, Charles Trevellians area. My ancestor was born in September around 1819. According to the 1850 Census, he is listed as 25 which would put his birth a bit later around 1825. His name was Pinkard Brannon to our family; however, when he came to WV his name was changed from Bramham. Before that, he shows on a census as Pinkard Napper. He married Eliza Gibson. They appear on marriages in Louisa County. Their first child looks Indian and was name Malinda. We have been told several stories. One is that he was related to Nimrod Bramham, a very wealthy Louisa countian. We have been told that one of this man’s daughters got pregnant by an Indian and had Pinkard. There is a possibility that Pinkard’s mothers name was Sarah. Then, we have heard that his father got a girl pregnant, a Sarah Bramham who was full-blooded Cherokee Indian. We have seen pictures of Pinkard and he definently looked that he could be Indian. His pension papers state (by his own admission) that he is black eyes, dark complected, and has dark hair. He traded in horses, served in the Civil War on the Union Side, owned over 1000 acres in Gilmer/Doddridge Counties of WV and is buried there among his many children. This man fathered other children outside of the bounds of marriage. Do you have any information related to the above? Do you have any set of twins living in the 1820’s-30’s, one of whom would have been named Sarah that was involved with any Bramhams, Nappers or Waltons? Any girls registered with the Cherokee nation that had a baby name Pinkard? Pinkard Napper, Pinkard Bramham or any other form of this name?

Query: My name is Kristy Newman Rochat from Knoxville, Knox Co, TN. I am the third great grandaughter of Cherokee Indian Chief, PathKiller of Roane (now Loudon) Co, TN. PathKiller fought along side Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Chattanooga, TN. Because of the Treaties of 1817 & 1819 and his services during the War of 1812, PathKiller was given a 640 acre reservation with a ferry on it during 1821. After a thirty year court battle in Roane Co, TN where his land was, PathKiller and his family were evicted off of his land. This was the longest court battle in history. I am a descendant of his child, Sarah PathKiller. Sarah married James T. Gardenhire in Roane Co, TN. Chief, PathKiller was my third great grandfather. I am currently trying to raise funds for his memorial plaque to be raised in the Riverside Park, Loudon, TN. Any contributions can be made to the BankFirst, PathKiller Funds, 406 Grove St., P.O.Box 900, Loudon, TN 37774. I am also looking for a picture of PathKiller which would be of enormous value to me. Our grandmother was born on April 17, 1888 in Harriman, TN, Elvira Ledbetter Tabor. The family stories are that they lived on the reservation at certain times but more in Harriman, TN.

Query: There is a story in my family that the male faction of the von Myer family from Germany came to Pennsylvania in the 1800s to avoid some kind of trouble they had gotten into over there. They supposedly preceded to take a number of females from a nearby Cherokee tribe as their wives (forgetting the ones they left in Germany, of course). Apparently, they established Myerstown, PA and that’s how my ancestors became part Cherokee, is this even possible? I didn’t think PA is know for Cherokee settlements. Can you help me figure out where to start to identify any truth to this family tale or figure out what tribal/Indian nation connections there could be?

Query: I’ve been told my patternal grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee woman named Ruby Herring. She married Artie Stark Sr. sometime in early 1900s. She came from the north eastern part of Oklahoma and live with her married family in south eastern Kansas. This is all the information I have at this time o her than I believe she had 3 sons with her husband before she died. I only recently found out that the woman I thought of as my grandmother was actuall my step-grandmother. I realize this as very little information. Query: Surname search for Stamper, Hix, Horne, Rhodes and Boss. We are looking for birth, death, marrige or cementery records. My grandmother was Amanda Belle Stamper (b. 12/25/1905) daughter of Steven G. Stamper (b. 1872-d. between 1915-1917) and Rosa L. Rhodes (b. 1874-d. between 1918-1919). She married a Tom Horne and lost a child named Lonnie Cecil and also had another child named Evelyn Lucille Horne (b.4/15/1920). She had a brother-in-law named Harvey L. Hix. Steven G. Stamper and Rosa also had John, Bill, Beatrice, Cora, June and Mossie (b.04/18/1900-d.10/10/1996) who was married (02/12/1917) to Harvey Hix (b.06/15/1896-d.7/1972). I have information that Steven G. Stamper’s father was also named Steven and his mothers name was Amanda. Amanda later married Norman Girvus Boss date of birth and death unknown and had more childred.

Query: I have attempted to trace my Blackburn genealogy. However, when I obtained my grandfather’s birth certificate, his father’s name was mentioned, but not much else. I do understand that there are many individuals with “family folklore” and fantascies about having American Indian heritage. My husband is having me trace his geneology to a different tribe and by accident, I fell upon the the .S. 1835 Census Index of Cherokee Indians East of the Mississippi. On this list, much to my surprise, I sway my surname appearing. The names were Lewis Blackburn age 46 and apparently his son, Richard Blackburn age 13. According to my family tales, the Blackburns arrived in North Carolina and subsequently moved North to Massachusetts where it has been told that they were innvolved in sea-faring ventures. The Blackburns who moved North reportedly were involved in the whaling industry and lived in or around Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The remaining ancestors, from what little I have been told were in the North Carolina area. The family speaks very little about the family line. I do know that the family was involved in ministry as well as education. I tried to get elderly aunts, who were teachers, well educated and possibly knowledgable about the family tree to assist me. At the time, around, 1990, they were very evasive, stated that they did not speak of the family past, and one quoted “good luck”. At that point I gave up. I now know, through the work that I am doing for my husband’s ancestry, that “white” people were very secretive about any American Indian blood realtions. Such topics were not spoken of and if any connections were made, they were denied or the finder was chastised. I asked my uncles about the family tree and they as well as my father, now deceased, all answered, “I don’t know”. Should the Blackburn in the aforementioned census be related to my family, Lewis Blacburn would be my great-grandfather. My grandparents, on my father’s side passed away when I was around three years old. Now, the remaining relatives who might have any knowledge are not competent.
There are some parallels that make me believe that there is some branch to the Cherokee Indian Tribe due to the following reasons:
1. Blackburn is a very uncommon name. However, there were members of the family who did own slaves and those unfortunate people did adopt the surnames of their “owners”.
2. I was told that the Blackburn family was first established in the South and there was mention of the Carolina region.
3. The family was a very strict, religious family. Men became ministers and up through today, the women and men tend to go into the educational field. This parallel leads me to believe that if, Lewis Blackburn possibly was a minister, he joined the tribe through marriage and taught his wife and children to read and write.
4. The family always portrayed an air of purness and superiority until ancestry questions were asked. Questions were not asnwered, very intelligent people became vague, and some of my telephone calls were met with gasps.
5. There is great secrecy about anything after my gradfather’s birth.
6. My father’s birth certificate does not indicate my grandfather’s place of birth.
7. I do know that my grandfather, William Blackburn, married Elizabeth Poole, whose family founded Taunton, Massachusetts.
8. The trail ends there.
9. One very interesting thing that I found from my relatives was strong discouragement in tracing the family lineage on the Blackburn side.
10. The struggle that I had tracing my husband’s ancestry to the Wampanoag Tribe in Massachusetts, the secrecy in birth and death records, the discouragement in tracing that particular portion of the lineage, and now, having been in touch with members of that tribe, tied the possibility of my linkage to the Native American Indian Tribe. The way that we established his background was through a collection of tin types and being able to decipher handwriting that identified the woman who is the connection.
11. As a result, I cannot use family folklore to begin my search, except for what I have already stated. I began to see familiar family reactions and this now makes sense that if there is a connection, people of the last two generations usually hid the ancestry. I am now considered a rebel for even pursuing my quest. Yet, considering how recent the lineage connedtion could be, I cannot understand how my father, as well as his six brothers, his aunts, all of whom were well educated did not know the history of their own father or brother and/or grandfather.
12. There is the possibility of a horrible criminal in the family, but my father was in law enforcement and with his sense of humor, he would have used this type of stiry as a party anecdote.
13. If there is any assistance that I can receive about the life and where to look for the continuation of the bloodlines of either Lewis or Richard Blackburn, I would greatly appreciate it.

Query: I am trying to find my mother’s people before all history is lost to us! The Cherokee heritage comes down from my mother’s maternal grandparents. Her mother, Lillie Hayes Burgess, was born Nov. 12, 1897, in Greenville, Alabama. Lillie’s parents were Henry Hayes and Laura Dawson Hayes. Henry Hayes’ parents were Albert and Viny (possibly Lavinia) Hayes. Henry was probably born in 1850s. Laura Dawson was raised by a family named Black, so she may also have been known as Laura Black before marriage. She, too, was probably born in 1850s or 1860s. They had 12 children, including Lillie. Some were born after 1900, some before. The others: Albert (died in infancy), George Washington Hayes, Joseph Burke Hayes, Avery Hayes, Walter Hayes, Drew Wesley Hayes, James Orville Hayes, Ordham Clint Hayes, Cora Hayes Butler, Janey Hayes Dawson and Zelma Hayes Cagell. Lillie later moved to Newport, Tennessee, and married Bruce Burgess. Bruce’s parents were William Burgess and Eliza Holt Burgess (Eliza’s father was Caleb Holt). Do any of these names ring a bell in *your* family tree? Cousins, if you’re out there, I am seeking any and all links! I’m just getting started, and want to find out as much as I can to pass it on to my own daughter. Due to a combination of poverty and alcoholism, my mother’s family was very dysfunctional and didn’t communicate much. When I was a youngster, my mother discouraged me from asking about the Indian part of my heritage. I think that, because she was born in the South and we grew up in a prejudiced rural area in the North, perhaps she was a little bit ashamed of her Indian blood. In fact, yesterday when I spoke with her on the phone was the first time she ever even told me what her mother looked like: “She had long black hair that she never cut, and real dark eyes.” Anyone who has done a genealogy and found any of the above names in it. I will use any and all information to discover the truth. I live in Alaska, and so will have to rely on the Internet and interlibrary loans to do most of the legwork. When I have all my ducks in a row, I will make a trip to Alabama, Tennessee or anywhere else I can find information.

Query: I’m trying to find any information that I can about my great grandmother who was at least part Cherokee her name was Margaret Braschear. I know that the spelling is incorrect this but nobody in my family knows the correct way. Query: My great grandmother Frances Elizabeth Jones (Foster) told me she was part Cherokee. All I know is she came from a little town in the mountains of Georgia near the Tenn border. His mother was peggie Shelton nee Morgan who was the daughter of Julia Morgan nee Lowery. There is no paternal information listed. Query: I am looking for information on a William Thomas Robbins. It is believed that he died around 1932, in either Craig or Mayes Counties, in Oklahoma. Social Security number searches lead us to believe that due to the rural nature of the territory at that time he had no social security number, and possibly no birth, marriage, or death records. It is also entirely possible that he may have resided within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation (being of Cherokee descent), therefore records may have been lost. One of the facts we do know is that he is buried at the Vinita Oklahoma Cemetary.

Query: Although I never knew my grandmother, Laura Lunsford Vandergriff or Vandergrift, family stories say she was Cherokee. Laura was born in TN abt 1886 and died in Nov 1932 in Harlan, KY. She married Dock William Warren Vandergriff around 1900. Dock was born around 1879 in TN and died in Norton, VA in Nov 1959. Does anyone out there have any information that may help in my search?

Query: Looking for information on a lady who was Cherokee. Her last name was Jacobs. I have no first name. She was the mother of John Jacobs and the grandmother of James Jacobs. I don’t know when she was born or when she died. She lived to be 116 years old and died in Tribee,Ok. A white man by the name of Lawson was the father of John Jacobs. She went to live with Mr. Lawson and his wife when she was 12 to 14 years old. She had one brother that she never saw again after going to live with the Lawsons. Do theses names appear in any of your records.

Query: I am trying to trace my lineage through my maternal granny’s family. The info I’ve got is limited, what I’ve been able to find out is this, my mother was born to Montie Catherine Ross in Huntsville, Ala. Montie was also born in the Huntsville area in Dec.1912 to Florence (maiden name either Dobbs or Lewis) and John Ross. John Ross died during WW1, he was born on the Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma. As a child I visited Cherokee North Carolina with my family & I remember my granny going through some of the museums & retelling me stories she had been told by her parents. We had even met an older woman who had known her and her parents when Montie was a child. But as I was only about 10 or so at the time the names and such are unclear to me. I would like to be able to pass on the stories and heritage to my children.

Query: I am needing firmative information on my Cherokee heritage. I have a roll number on one of my ancestors, David Wilson Hale #5295, born 8-15-1847, died 1-1-1935. David has two full brothers by the names of John Preston Hail, born in Decatar Meigs County in Tennessee 8-30-1849 died in Broken Arrow Oklahoma in 6-26-1935, and James Monroe Hail,12-16-1851 to 7-9-1911; readmitted to Indian Territory in 1896. The last names are spelled different but they are still supposed to be full brothers. I am needing to prove that they are full brothers by birth certificates. John is supposed to have or applied for an Eastern roll number. In 1907? The father of these three boys is George Wilson Hail (3-14-1816 to 9-10-1852?) If this query can lead to any further information, where to go or who to ask,ect., it will be greatly appriciated. The other information that I have that may be of some help is: the county that John was born in, Meigs, used to be Rhea county but was split in 1838 I believe. I would appriciate any help concerning this heritage.

Query: My gggrandfather was Bill Hopper who was Cherokee. My ggaunt Maggie (Margaret Etta) Warren wrote a letter to my ggrandfather talking about him and his Cherokee papers. Unfortunately I do not have those papers. Hopper married Ann Mohala or Mohaly Piper: b 31 Oct., 1857 in Aiken, South Carolina. Bill and Mohala had (1)one daughter Qualla or Qulla Hopper, I believe in Hillsboro, TX: born around 1879. From the letter: Bill had been married before and had 2 or three daughters by his first marriage. Sorry I have no names here. I am trying to find any records or papers that document their lives.

Query: My parents and grandparents told me I am part Cherokee. They are deceased and I have no formal records. I was born in Spiro, Oklahoma (1940) son of Aaron Malachi, Jr (1910) son of Dr Aaron Malachi Mixon (1866)and Claudia Lee Kersh Collins (1878). She was widow of a full blood Choctaw Jack Collins if Ft Smith, Arkansas. Dr Mixon was son of James Joyce and Ann Green. There is a county in Texas, Greene, named after her family. James Joyce was born in Lawrence County, Mississippi in 1828. My father said my great-great grandfather Kersh left Mississippi to move to Texas. My father said one of his maternal great-grandfathers was Confederate General Stand Watie but I can find no proof that any of his children had any offspring. I am hoping someone can help me make my Cherokee connection. My grandmother looked part Indian and was on the Indian rolls in Oklahoma, but I believe this was due to her marriage to Jack Collins. Can you help?
