Does anyone know if, Elizabeth Newman(b.7/9/1786)Columbia County, GA who married Thomas Wroe(b. 5/1/1771), may have been part or full blood Cherokee? Her father was Edmund St. John Newman(1762-1850) and mother was Mary Conquest Wyatt (1762-1854).

Query: I am attempting to locate information about a family who lived in Warren County, NC. The father was at least partially Native American and part African American. He was born in Axtell, NC and then later moved to Manson, NC. His father, Sandy Meadows was referred to, along with others in his family as the “Meadow Rats.” Here is the lineage that I have right now as I understand it: Benny Meadows, Parents — Sandy and Lydia Meadows, Spouse — India Reid, Spouse’s Parents — India Smith and Edmund Reid.
I believe that Benny Meadows was born in 1890 but am not positive. I have had trouble finding a death certificate that corroborates that date of birth. I am attempting to look for corroborating evidence that Benny and or India had (at least partly) a Native American Heritage and from which tribe. If you could help I would really appreciate it. I believe that India had a Cherokee heritage. I am not certain that these names are spelled correctly or that the dates are accurate. If you could help in any way I would appreciate it.

Query: My mother’s family is Boone directly from Israel Boone (Daniel’s Brother). We always know we were Cherokee, but didn’t have the specifics in the geneological books on the Boones. Now I have a copy of a letter from Granpa Joel N. Boone’s sister Zoneta that talks about the Cherokee Seal she has and that it is from Granma Selvidge whose name was Anna Mcantire who was full blood Cherokee. She thinks Granpa Selvidge was Cherokee also but was not sure. Her letter goes on to say Granma Selvidge (MCantire) was born in Lancaster County Virginia and ended up in Missouri. She thinks they were driven from Virginia and the Carolinas on the Trail of Tears but isn’t sure. My mother is deceased, but her and I were always proud of our Cherokee heritage even if we didn’t know the details. I would love to have the proof and be able to show my family and friends.

Query: I’m writing this for my husband who is part Cherokee. We are looking for information. My husband’s name is Gross. He was born in LaFollette, TN but his family stretches from Harlan Co, KY to Clinton, TN. His grandfather was 1/2 Cherokee by his mother whos name was “Jane Bond”. She was in her 30’s when she was raped by my husband’s great-grandfather, she was a “bond servant” for the Gross family. Grandpa Gross was born around 1904, so she could have been born sometime after the Civil War. My theory is that they gave her the name Jane and because of her job she bacame Jane Bond. She is buried alone in the Seiber Cemetary somewhere near Harlan, KY. There is Cherokee blood on his mothers side but many more years back (late 1700’s to early 1800’s) and we know that the male was called “Cherokee Smokey” by census records and his wifes name was listed only as “squaw”. If anyone has any information on Jane Bond and her ancestors please e-mail us.

Query: I am a college student who is helping to plan our local 4-H camp in Jackson County WV. Due to the recent issues taken on the topic of Native American Traditions being used at our 4-H camps, we would like to have special programs this year to educate our campers about the Native American traditions that we use. We desperately need a Native American guest speaker who would be willing to come to our camp for an afternoon and teach our campers about his or her heritage. Our camp theme this year is 100 years of 4-H and we are made of approximately 200 campers that are age 9-21. Our camp is June 17-20, 2002. I realize that this is short notice, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could respond in letting me know if you know any people of the Native American Heritage that would be willing to come and speak to our camp or someone else that I could contact about this subject. If you are interested at all, please let me know so that I can have my camp director get in contact with you.

I have a copy of a letter written by his grandaughter stating that he was half Cherokee. His parents were William POWELL, b. 1809, d. 19 Jun 1909, and Caroline “Carrie” WOMACK b. Abt. 1817. According to the letter by Peter Thomas’ grandaughter, William Powell came to KY with Daniel Boone. William’s parents were William POWELL and Mary DAY. Caroline Womack’s parents were William WOMACK and Rachel GILPIN. Can anyone tell me which of these lines is the Cherokee line?
The other line I am looking for is my GGrandmother. This is according to family oral history. Her name was Daisy Catherine TAYLOR, b 26 May 1879 in Martinstown, Putnam Co, MO, d. 01 Oct 1960 in Waynesville, MO. She married Columbus Jackson WEST. Daisy Catherine Taylor’s parents were John Henry TAYLOR, b. 11 Jan 1848 in GA, d. 11 May 1927 in Worthington, Putnam Co, MO, and Elmira NEWMAN, b 05 Aug 1859 in Putnam Co, MO. John Henry Taylor’s parents were George TAYLOR and Martha NICHOLS (no further info yet). Elmira Newman’s parents were George NEWMAN and Elizabeth RYALS. Any help on these lines is greatly appreciated.

Query: I am searching for my great-grandmother, Anna May or Mary Ann Belcher. She was always called “Annie.” My grandmother told us that her mother was Cherokee (I don’t know if full-blooded.) She was born in 1855 in Virginia, and died in 1893 in Texas. I believe her family lived in Texas, as that is where the first child was born after her marriage to James Henry Ray. I have never found a county for their marriage. After the birth of their first child, the family returned to Missouri, where several more children were born, before moving again to Texas where Annie died at the birth of her last child who also died and was named for her mother. No one know where that death occurred nor where the family lived when they were in Texas.
Here is the family I am seeking: James H. Ray/Rhea (He always used Ray.) & Annie Belcher. Children: 1. Lucy (md. Erwin), born in Texas, 2. William Price, 3. Rowena Melissa (md. Null), 4. Carrie Centha (md. Phillips) [my grandmother], 5. Jimmy, 6. Mary Maude (md. McGrath), 7. Hattie Lela (md. Dillard), 8. Zetta Luvena (md. Thompson), 9. Benjamin Ray, 10. Infant, died in Texas.
