Query: Hello, I would like to explore the possible reality of my Native American ancestory. My maternal great-grandmother was said to he full-blooded Cherokee from Alabama. She married a freed African and together they had two daughters, (my grandmother was one of them). My great-grandmother sadly died giving birth to my grandmother, thus leaving her with only her African father and his folks to raise her. Therefore she never knew any of her Native American relatives. I grew up looking at my grandmother and seeing clearly that she did not look African, but decidely Native American, my mother as well. My grandmother showed us pitures of her mother, who was so beautiful and very young. What does that make my mother and my siblings?

Query: Looking for info on a Zilphia Elizabeth King- married to a James Marion Crawford or John Henry Crawford. Died about 1900. Had two sons Willie Ray Garfied Crawford born 1888 and a Joseph George Washington Crawford born 1890.Both boys were supposely born in Tennessee. My great grandpa changed his name to John Henry after a run in with law and a escape from jail, don’t know if that was while still married to Zilphia or after her death. He also was known as James Marion John Henry Crawford or J.H. Crawford Sometimes I question if she died or if he just took boys and left. They did have 2 other children born to them but think they died at birth or shortly after named Albert and Lizzie. John Henry married several times after she died. I had heard their records were destroyed in a fire at the courthouse in Montgomery, Ala. Outside of her being of Indian blood that’s all I know. Her grandchildren now in 80’s and 90’s know nothing as they were all born long after her death.

Query: Looking for information on Lucyella Phyledemar Hukill who was married to Charles Wesley Griffith. Couple moved to Jenny Lind ARK. Della Hukill is purported to be Cherokee or Choctaw and her husband C.W. Griffith is also thought to be part Native American. Della was an orphan and was adopted. I need to prove our indian heritage, please help me out here. No birth records that far back for her mother. I know that she came from California.
“Lucyella Phydelman (Della) Hukill was born on December 29, 1872 in Sonoma, California to James Scott and Mary Elizabeth Hukill. James took Mary Elizabeth and his two daughters Minnie Zetta and Oregon Scott to California during the last part of the Reconstruction Era in Arkansas. Della’s father, James Scott Hukill died on May 25, 1876 in Sebastian County, Arkansas. The couple moved to Huntington, Arkansas, to work in the coal mines there; as coal mining was very prominent in South Sebastian County. Charles went by the nickname, “Wes.” Wes Griffith, died from a heart attack on April 4, 1927. Here is an article taken from the Southwest Times Record,
“COAL WORKER FALL DEAD AT HUNTINGTON

She died in the late 1980s in Arizona. Laffayett Griffith (Bob) was born October 1895 in Sebastian County. He died when he was 16 years old (around 1911). Coop Prairie is located in Mansfield, Arkansas, on the Scott County side of the town. Della died on February 8, 1961 from complications from diabetes. I do not have records of Wes being indian, but I have heard my grandmother say that he Dad was part indian. Query: I am trying to find my Cherokee people but I have absolutely no imformation on the person I am trying to find. This is the story that has been handed down from generation to generation. So here is the story:
In 1814 Mary Mason was standing out in her front yard and she saw a young Indian woman running towards her and the young Indian woman had something in her arms and she ran up to Mary Mason and place a baby in her arms and told Mary to hide her baby and take care of him. Mary didn’t know what the young woman was running from so Mary ran deep into the woods with the baby. The Indian woman ran off in the opposite direction. Mary Mason saw two Indian scout running as fast as they could and going in the direction the young Indian woman had gone. Soon the two Indian scouts came back with the young woman between them. Mary Mason never saw the young Indian woman again. Mary didn’t have a name for the child nor a birthdate for him. Mary Mason named the child: Peter Hartless Mason and for his birthdate Peter was given the date the young woman gave him to Mary as the 14 Oct 1814. I have been searching many many years along with others that are kin to Peter H. Mason. We do know that Peter H. Mason is of the Cherokee Tribe but that is far as it goes.
Peter Hartless Mason grew up to be a fine young man and he married Dianna Sorrells and they had 17 children. My grand father is the grandson of Peter H. Mason. If anyone out there can help me in any way to help locate his natural mother, please fill free to e-mail me. You will never know what this will mean to me. I thank you so much for your time and I appreciate all you have done.

Query: I am searching for any information on the Coggins family from Western Carolina. My grandfather’s name was Noah Coggins and he lived in Gastonia, Cullowhee, Sylva, Brevard. He was related to David Ransom Coggins, Perry Coggins, Frank Coggins, Elsie Coggins of Gastonia, Alice Coggins Stephens and possibly a Lucille Coggins. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My grandmother told me once that my grandfather’s grandfather was a Cherokee chief. I know that most of these family members were born in N.C in the late 1800’s.

Query: We adopted a child in September of 1995, and were told by the agency that she was part Cherokee. As a matter of fact, the agency said they had to get approval (of some kind) of the adoption from the Cherokee Nation. Our daughter is highly interested in this part of her heritage and we don’t know how to proceed (the adoption files were sealed). If anyone has a thought on what we can do, please email me.

Query: I am looking for information on William Benjamin Franklin who was killed on the indian reservation in Rockford, Alabama in the 1800’s. If anyone can assist me with info, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, I am trying to find out how the bloodline is calculated. For instance: If my ggrandfather and g.grandmother were full cherokee, and one of their children married someone of another background, would that make their child 1/2? Also, if they had a child would that make their child 1/4?.
