Query: Am looking for Leatherwood, Nicholas Cicero Leatherwood married to Caroline ? are in the census in Haywood, NC. Their son Robert married Nora Lee ? and Nora is on the Cherokee Rolls and lists as a “no show” for the hearing (Nora’s father was named “Parched Corn” and for some reason I keep picking up the last name “Flowers”). Leahterwoods also listed on the Cherokee rolls but were “denied”. Any photos or information would be greatly appreciated. Both Cicero and Robert are buried in the National Cemetery here in Chattanooga. According to the person at the National Cemetery “No records were required, filed, or kept”. What a shame! Please help if you have any information. I do remember hearing stories about Robert and Nora traveling back and forth from Tennessee to Arkansas by covered wagon. She evidently was from Arkansas. Also have Indian heritage on father’s side – Radcliff. The original family of Radcliff settled in Ellijay, Georgia.

Query: I’m trying to locate information on my great-great grandparents Luther and Martha Thurman. Their son was named Luther Willie Thurman & they also had 4 daughters that I know of. One was named, Bertha (whom everyone called Aunt Pat), Bulla (not sure on the spelling), Edna & Lilly Thurman. My grandfather married my grandmother Dorothy Lee Polston from Kentucky. I do know one story which my mother shared with me… She told me my great-great and maybe one more great grandfather, traded his horse for my great-great and maybe one more great grandmother. I am trying to find more information on my Cherokee Indian family history. It’s my blood line and I have enough information about them. I just want to know more about where I come from. Every site I visit wants money for this. When I tell people I am part Indian, they have a hard time believing it because of my hair and eye color. Which really don’t bother me now that I am older. However, I would like to see pictures of my great-great and even more great grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Again, my grand father was Luther Wile Thermion, grandmother was Dorothy Lee (Polston) Thermion. My great grandparents were Luther & Martha Thermion. I have a few more relatives living in Nebraska which I believe were all born in Kentucky. My uncle, Winston AB Thermion married to Linda. My aunt, Annalee Joyce (Thermion) Jones married to the late Lavern Jones. Uncle William Howard Thermion. My mother Violet D. Query: Does any of this sound familiar to anyone: As a follow up to my post last month, My ggfather (Louis Edwin Wood 1889 TX-1956 OK) was supposed to be 1/4 Cherokee. His son Vic Wood wrote a memoir which had the following paragraph: “In 1942, we made a trip…to Rusk, Texas to see where Dad was born. we visited some of our relatives on the way. One was especially interesting. It was a cousin of Dad’s who lived between Kilgore and Henderson, Texas – A full-blooded Cherokee whose grandfather had ‘proven-up’ for his land allotments. Dad’s grandfather had not done this…therefore we did not get our land allotments. This cousin….She had a six foot cyclone fence around the one hundred acre farm….She had over one hundred oil wells on her three farms.” None of this makes any sense. I can’t find any “land allotments” to Cherokees in Texas? I’m not sure if this is just fiction, or they made a mistake as to blood quantum/tribe, ect. I’ve looked through every cousin-1st cousin – 2nd cousin, ect and can’t find anyone on the rolls. The one semi-link I can find is a Eudora (Dora) McHaney (m.Moore), born in TX 1850 who died in IT OK in 1885. As a researcher I think – “All you had to do was put her name in there!” Very frustrating. To be honest, I’m not interested in enrolling with a tribe, or in “land allotments,” ect. The heritage is what is important to me. So if this sounds familiar at all I would love to have ANY information. I would also be happy to share any information I have on this family.

Deanna Mcclure
Query: Hello, my name is Deanna Mcclure in Tulsa, OK. I have been doing research on my mother’s father’s side of the family. My uncle, before passing on, did this whole research and I have a hugh note book typed up of our past family, I am trying to find the Indian in our past so that some of the family can register. So this is what I want to know if you have ever heard of. According to the story which was told to Albin Azbill, of Richmond, Kentucky by his grandmother, Mabala Jane Becknell Azbill, an indian chief of the Cherokee nation, perhaps Chief Dragging Canoe, (d1792), son of Attakullakulla, had visited the Becknells and had often hunted with Samuel and his young son, Thomas in the near regions, many times Chief brought his wife and slept in a wigwam on the Becknell land. On one occasion the Becknells arose early to greet their indian friends however, this time the wigwam was empty, and no sign of anyone was seen. The Becknells reasoned that misfortune had struck, and began to search for clues, under some bushes and leaves they hear the cry of a baby searching further they found a small child tied to its dead mothers breast, the Becknells took the child home and raised her as their own. The mother had died during child birth and following the Cherokee custom the father left the child to perish with its dead mother. Malinda was the motherless indian baby. When Malinda approached womanhood William Asbille made plans to marry her he discovered that she did not have no legal surname. While she had been raise by the Becknells she was never adpoted. They made her last name Ross the maiden name of his mother Dorthy Ross Asbille or parhaps she was a descendant of Daniel Ross, Cherokee father of the famous Chief John Ross. She became known to the later generation as Malinda Ross.

His daughter Francis Elnora Little Evans and her sons and daughters had the same physical features. Francis claimed she was part Cherokee and spoke broken English. Her and her three siblings could not read or write according to the 1980 Federal Census when they were teenages living with their mother Nancy Roberts Little French and their step-father William French. I would appreciate any help in finding proof that Juda (no maiden name) Hickey was of Cherokee Lineage. My Lineage to Juda!
