I have not been able to find birth records for her only my grandfather’s birth certificate listing her name and age at time of his birth in 1921 in Nashville, TN. She listed herself as white on the certificate but I remember her having the most beautiful tanned skin, long black hair, and deep brown eyes. She also wrote on the certificate she was born in Winston Alabama. My mother said she was Cherokee but did not go past that explanation because great grandma was always silent about her past. Query: I am trying to find information on my Great Grandmother. She went by MAE RUNNELS (often misspelled as MAY REYNOLDS) but she told my mother her name was NANCY MAEBEL RUNNELS and that her Native American name was RUNNING DEER. She also told my mother she was Blackfoot but the little we’ve found actually points towards Cherokee. She was born April 23, 1910 in Holmes Hollow, VA. I have her parents names as MARY ANN HOLMES (1892-1936) and JAMES RUNNELS CARROLL and the only info I can find on him is that he died in 1918 and the mom remarried a WILLIAM H DAVENPORT (1847-1926). She had a sister named OCCIE TAVIIA ANN CARROLL (8/20/1913-4/14/1990). Why MAE used RUNNELS and OCCIE used CARROLL, I don’t know. There was talk that MAE was adopted by a white family. We always thought her mom’s name was POLLY. She could have been adopted out right, or she might have just been adopted by her step-father and we just had the mother’s name wrong. If you know anything that could help me track down more on her please e-mail me! Thank you.
