Query: I am looking for information on my great grandmother. She was listed in 1870 Wayne county Tennessee census. She was 17 and a farm worker at the time. That is the earliest trace of her that I can find. Her name was Sarah Melton. I know that she had at least one child named Leonard Snow Melton. (My grandfather) I also know that she later married Joseph McGee from Laudedale county Alabama. Query: I am looking for a link to Thomas Floyd (or variation) Phillips, born in the early to mid 1930’s. Tom lived in North Carolina during the 1950’s. Tom lived in Southern California in the 1960’s. Tom has 2 daughter’s: Elaine “Terry” Phillips of NC, DOB 3/31/55 and Lynn Annette Phillips of NC, born 4/3/56. Lynn and Terry’s mother is: Shirley Jean (maiden name unkown) Shirley Jean and Tom were divorced 2/26/64. Paperwork was submitted by Tom who at the time lived at 600 N. Garfield Avenue in Monterey Park, California. I am told that Tom’s grandmother is full blooded Cherokee indian.

Query: I am trying to find information on my great-great grandmother and her family. Her name is Virginia A Raines. She married a gentleman named Bill Whitney and they raised five sons in northeastern Texas in the late 1800’s. She was a Methodist in good standing according to papers admitting the boys to a Boys Home after both she and her husband died. I have a photograph that shows my great grandfather at some kind of ceremony with many other gentlemen in full Indian garb (in the 1920’s). I would love to connect with anyone searching for Cherokee Raines ancestors and maybe we can unlock some of the mysteries together!

Query: I have found a person on the Dawes Rolls whom I believe to be my great grandmother. I have written for copies of the death certificates for her, my grandfather, and father as the links would follow. Is there anything else I can do? Query: The Tester Family: I’m looking for any information regarding the Tester’s, Dunford’s, Simms or Delp. They were from Marion, VA. My grandfather Andrew H. Tester told our family that we have Cherokee blood in our history. I’ve talked with my relatives and they can’t seem to recall a name. I was told by my Aunt that Sarah Tester was a name she thought was told to her by my grandfather. She told me that Sarah was on the front page of a weekly magazine, The Sunday Sun which could be from MD. The article said she was 96 years old and had dedicated much of her life helping the Cherokee with their Right’s, Protests and the needy. If anyone has any information, I would love to hear from.

Query: My greatgrandmother name was listed as Gertrude Laird on the 1920 Newton, Co. census in Neosho, Mo. Her husband was James R. Laird. They had several children. I am desperatly trying to find her maiden name or anything about her. My dad, her grandson, met her when he was very young and knows she was Cherokee. Her close friend, Minnie Holfman, was also Cherokee. I have a birth year of 1891 in Illinois, and a death year of 1959.

Query: Looking for confirmation that John Boyd was of native ancestry. We have family heirlooms of both Potawatomi and Cherokee and there are family stories of of our grandfathers and greatgrandfathers “living with the Indians.” Unfortuantely, no living relative can substantiate Native ancestry. We are often asked by people if we have Native ancestry, because of our coloring. John Boyd, born March 7, 1850; died Aug 3, 1917. Descendants Leslie Almon (my forefather who also “lived with the Indians”) Born Dec 31 1882 William Born Nov 15, 1887, Howard Born Aug 17, 1892. Query: I am trying to find out if one of my Cherokee ancestors was on the Dawns Roll or on the C.D.I.E Roll. The person I am looking for is James David Beales born somewhere in Oklahoma in the late 1800s. In my research I was unable to find when and where he died. He was born to an Emma Alice Beales and Roger Mills County the rest is unknown to me. I have no birthdate nor death date on Roger Mills County. As far as I know, they were all rounded up and given numbers and told that if they wanted to leave they needed permission to leave the reservation.

Their children changed the spelling to Wilson. My grandmothers name was May Belle Wilson and she told my mother in1915 that she was part Cherokee. Query: My grandfather, Billy Bailey, was raised in Kentucky. We have always been told that his mother, Mary Brock Bailey, was at least 3/4 Cherokee. Her parents were Floyd Brock and Jane Stepp Brock, also from Kentucky. Now, we also believe that the Baileys were Cherokee. Does anyone know of any Baileys, Brocks, and/or Stepps from Kentucky? Query: Jesse James Smith, son of John and Sarah Smith. Jessie lived in Arkansas and southeast Missouri during the late 1800 to early 1900. He died in 1973. Julie died a few years later. John Smith left Sarah when Jesse was 3 years old. She raised him alone in the Ozark Mountains. Never re-married. Don’t know what happened to John. John Smith was the son of Redbird and Lacy Smith. Jesse married Julie Hicks. (Jesse was her 2nd husband) Julie Hicks was the daughter of Margaret Phillips and Oscar (Otter) Hicks. Jesse and Julie Smith were both Cherokee. No birth records for either person. They told me when I was a teenager they didn’t have birth certificates. Who is John Smith? Query: I’m trying to trace my Cherokee roots through my fathers side of the family. He died when I was young. Perhaps the following information will help. My dads mother’s family were cherokee, and I’m told her mother took part in the march called, The Trail of Tears. My dads name was: Finnis Sanford Denney. My Grandmother was: Sara Ann (Hale) Denney. She was married to: Yerby James Denney (not sure if Yerby or James is first or second names). My Great grandmother we believe her name was: Anna Hale. It’s also belived they were from GA, but settled in Alabama.

Query: I am an African-American male living in Southern California. I have been told by my mother that I have Cherokee roots. I recently found out from a Native friend person online that the Blacks who were slaves of the Cherokee are of the Tsalagi nation. I don’t know how true this is but I was wondering if I might be able to find an ancestor of mine. The surname on my great grandmothers side is Tull. This was her married name. I hope this helps.
