Query: I am looking for info on Charles Sanford Arrowood, or wife Nola Guy Arrowood. These are my great grandparents, whom I believe to be Cherokee. Both died in August (unsure of year), at age 35 and 34, respectively, they were born around 1890, and lived in the NC Pisgah Nat. Forest. The incredible story relayed to me is that one of their fathers was a tribal chief, and Charles and another Cherokee invented a steam engine. At the time of the invention, they resided on the reservation, but were forced to leave because of the invention. It is said the government discovered it, and somehow forced them to leave. I also was told they were removed from the Cherokee rosters over this issue. They had three children, Junior Arrowood, Pearl Arrowood Bailey, and Helen Viola Arrowood Bowen (my grandmother, deceased Feb. 2000.)

Query: I am a “Gen-4” grandson of Alfred Barlow & Elizabeth Gibson. My father, George Lee Walker, is retired and has been deep into geneology for many years. My particular interest has been more focussed on establishing the truth of rumors that Elizabeth was Cherokee. Our family tradition has it that Alfred was a guard on the Trail of Tears and married her there. There is a documented marriage in Rutherford County, TN on June 23, 1834 (my birthday!). The family eventually settled in Neosho, MO. I am aware of Laura (?) Whipple Barlow’s recollections of Elizabeth as being Cherokee but not wanting to sign the tribal roles because she had been “rejected by her family for marrying into the white race.” I spent a term back in college in the mid-80’s researching “Cherokee factionalism” during the Civil War, especially in relation to Alfred & Elizabeth’s son Matthew. It was very interesting. Some Cherokee were supportive of intermarriage, which was one reason the Cherokee Nation split on the issue of slavery (intermarriage with Southern plantation-owning whites). Laura’s story suggests that the views of Elizabeth’s family on her marriage would be very likely those of traditional full-blooded Cherokee, anti-slavery, pro Union, some of whom eventually became Ketoowah (Pin Indian). To support this idea, Matthew Barlow seems to have had strong values on the issue. Laura mentions he refused a gift of slaves at his wedding and his cousins swore blood vengeance against him. He fled to Missouri with his family and died under suspicious circumstances. His home was within 20 miles of the place where the first Keetowah Society meeting was held. That’s the summary of what I know. Still always on a quest to substantiate our Cherokee roots through Elizabeth. Can anyone help?

Bonnie
Query: I am looking for a Rebecca Davis in the 1830’s of Wilkes county she is also shown in 1830 in Onslow county and then she is missing in 1840 and 1850. She shows back up in Onslow in 1860 and 1870. She is Cherokee Indian and has children with her last name, it is stated she never married or showed she was married. Our family believes she and her family hid out for those 20 years. Does anyone have any information on her?
