Query: I am searching for information on ancestry of my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Benge (Bing, Bange or Bains), who was listed in the Greenwood, Pulaski Co. Kentucky census records as half Cherokee/half “black Dutch.” Elizabeth at age 16 gave birth to my g grandmother, Annie Catherine, prior to Elizabeth’s marriage to Benjamin Clark Kidd on Dec. 28, 1871. (Witnesses were M.P. Jones, J.S. Wright and Mary Richardson) in Wayne County, Kentucky. I have several questions I’m trying to research. Was Benjamin Clark Kidd Annie Catherine’s real father? Who was Elizabeth Benge’s father? Who was Annie Benge? (On birth records, there is a vague reference to a “Marcum” (spelling uncertain) as the father of Annie Benge’s children. While Annie Benge supposedly married Thomas Benge, there is some doubt about whether she is the right Annie. If she is the Annie who married Thomas Benge, her maiden name would have been Anna Chesnut. (Personally, I don’t believe we have the right line here with the Chesnuts.) The only thing I know for sure is that there has to be a Cherokee connection. Also, there is some indication that Annie’s real name was “Vada.” I have other information about supposed offspring of Annie, etc., but at this point I’m not sure what is accurate since various accounts differ so greatly. I would be eager to hear from anyone who is conducting a similar search or has additional information. Also, much thanks to Glenda McComas who has traced an ancestor to this line for providing information. Her ancestor is my gg grandmother’s brother, James Benge. (My line is Mathew William Holmes/Annie Catherine Kidd to Nolie E. Holmes/Ester Neslon to Jess Willard Holmes/Doris G. Willis (my parents).

Query: According to my mother: her mother, (my grandmother) was a full-blooded Cherokee. Back in 1970 or so I did a roots check and the National Archives of Washington, D.C. sent me a black and white piece of plastic sheeting. On that sheeting was my grand mother’s and grandfather’s names along with the date of their marriage, the names of all seven of their children, of which the the only female child listed was my mother. I can’t remember if there was a date marking their deaths. I also do not remember if there was any information on it stating nationality. I lost the paper a long time ago. But I was told by an employee of the Archives that if I wanted to find it again I’d have to come down to the National Archives and search for it myself. I was asurred that they still had items stored there on Microfilm. My question is would that information be counted as valid and original since it comes from the U.S. Federal Government? Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Query: I am trying to find out if my ancestors had any type of Roll Number. The only ancestor that I have any type of information about is my great-great-grandmother Naomi Ruth Lewis. I think that she was born sometime in the early 1900’s and dies sometime around 1980-PRES. I have asked my parents and grandparents if they could help me find any information, but they told me not to worry about it, so it looks like I am on my own. Naomi, I think, died in or near St. Charles, MO and was married to a man named Antoine Dorlaque. I know of one child that they had. A man by the name is John Dorlaque who also lived in St. Charles, MO. If anyone can help me out, or know where I can even begin to look, please let me know.
