Query: MCDUFFIE, LOCKE, CUMBAA, GEZELY, PROCTER, TAYLOR. Looking for any native american connection to my biological family. Both sides of my family are of Cherokee Ancestry. I was adopted, so I don’t have all the basic knowledge. Looking for info on decendants of James McDuffie (or any of the McDuffie family from Coffee and Geneva Co, GA. Any connection to the LOCKE Family. Eva R. McDuffie, Married William Isaiah Locke. Josephine Cumbaa (also possibly Cambas, or Cambas-Wilkerson). Maternal side is GEZELY, (possibly Geesely, Geezely, Gesley.etc). Name was Mary Christine (Elizabeth) Gezely. Maiden Mary Christine(Elizabeth) Procter. Her Mother’s name was FAIRY PROCTER. The Gezely-Procter connect somehow to the Taylor family and they are from the Kentucky-Tennessee area and can trace their roots back to the Trail of Tears (i dunno how). The Lockes, McDuffies are from Geneva and Coffee Counties in Georgia. They immigrated from Scotland in the 1800s.

Query: Would appreciate any thing that would help me and my Cousins verify stories heard through the years that our Great-Grandfather was full bloodied Cherokee. My Aunt, only one left on Dad’s side still swears it is true (though she was only about 5 when he died). The earliest information I can find on him that is definitely true, is from the 1900 census. Although smudged, it appears he is listed as NICKLAS STRANGE, w/ children Mary A., Beecher M., Mitchell, Dock M., Itty O., and Etta L. In the 1910 and 1920 census, he is listed as Nick Strange. The 1910 census shows his wife as Jane ——. In all these census’ they lived in the Dandridge area of Jefferson County, TN. Stories thru the years were that Nick (which we understood was short for Nicodemus) was full bloodied Cherokee, born around 1858 in Jefferson County TN. However, we can’t find anything that would help verify this. Anything regarding Nick would be appreciated.

Query: John McMimms (Mimms) married 1/4 blood Cherokee woman named Nannie Collins. Na-Ni was her Cherokee name. Na-Ni was born in 1803. Na-Ni’s parents were Na-Ni Cordey (1/2 blood)b ~ 1790, and Parker Collins (a white man). Na-Ni Collins’ grandparents were Thomas Cordey (a white man), b ~ 1765 and Susannah Sonicooie, am Full Blood Cherokee woman of the Blind Savanah Clan (Wild Potato Clan). John’s McMimms(Mimms)Cherokee name was “Black Hawk.” He was well respected among the Cherokees in Tennessee and North Georgia. A daughter whose name was Rennie was born sometime around 1820. I recently learned this information. It could be that Rennie is my gg grandmother whose name was Rutha. Rennie could have been changed her ‘familiar name’ to a more English version, or simply take a Bible name. Bible names were very popluar in those days. Family lore passed down is that Rutha was Cherokee. Any information would be most appreciated. Thank you.
