Query: My 2ggrandfather, Orville R. Starr, was according to his daughter, 1/2 Cherokee. He was in the Texas Cavalry, CSA. He was killed in a raid at his home somewhere in Texas in about 1874. His children were scattered and raised by various families. I only know for sure of Nancy Jane, Will, Annie Catherine, and their 1/2 brother, Hugh King (from the mother, Susie Pierce’s 1st marriage). Apparently Susie was also killed in the raid. I’m looking for any information about this family. Query: I approach this problem from two fronts, both my dads and my mothers sides of the family. On my dads side, the question concerns his great grandmother, Jane Morris Marvel, wife of George Marvel. They were married about 1841, in either Illinois or Indiana, we have not been able to find any record. My grandma, who would become very upset when we talked about grandpas dad being in the Civil War, (he was on the wrong side), when it came to Jane and her daughter Orpha, would be the first to agree she was an Indian woman. On my mothers side of the family, her grandma was a woman born in Tennessee, named Sarah Whitson, who did marry an Indian man named Preston Marion. Sarah’s mother who was married to a Samuel Wesley Whitson, is suppose to have been an Indian woman as well. Her mother died either in TN. or maybe AR. Samuel died in Oklahoma between 1925 and 1937.

Query: My maternal grandmother was one-fourth Cherokee. She was born in Alexandria or Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1889. Her grandfather was a Cherokee, full blood. Her grandmother was a black woman. I have always assumed that she was a slave. (My grandmother died when I was a child, before I was able to question her about her ancestry.) I am trying to determine how the two of them met, when and where they married and which culture supported them. The intermarriage of black men and Native American women is fairly well documented, but I have found little information about the intermarriage of black women and Native American men. Where do I begin?
