Query: Family legend says that my wife’s great grandfather WILLIAM NEWBERRY went to America possibly in the 1880’s. He returned to Wales in 1891 with his bride MARY NEWBERRY (formerly SMITH). Sadly mary died on the 7th November 1891 just hours after giving birth to a daughter. The legend says Mary was Cherokee and her grand children were dark skinned with striking facial features. The only reference on the 1880 census to a MARY SMITH of Indian origin was in Michigan and she was married to WILLIAM SMITH, occupation farmer also classified as Indian. They had four children, SARAH SMITH (b.abt 1872), MARY ANN SMITH (b. abt 1874), PAUL SMITH (b abt 1876) and JOHN SMITH (b. abt 1878). As this is the only Indian Mary Smith of the right age in the census is she the one I’m looking for and if so what happened to her first family? Mary was 35 when she died and is buried in Cardiff, Wales. If any of this rings a bell please contact me.

Query: I have three enrolled members of the Western Cherokee Tribe. They are Caroline Langford/Lankford born in the mid 1800’s in Arkansas or Oklahoma, another is Delilah Brewer, born in the 1800’s in Mississippi. I am also a descendent of Major Ridge who is on the out cast rolls from his daughter Martha. My problem is my ex-husband took old family bibles and things of value and either burned them or destroyed them. I did as a nursing student submit to a blood quantum experiment test and I have all four First Nations markers in my blood, as there are other members who were Tsalagi who moved, did not register, or were outcasts. In my family, including a little Numunuu. I did originally have a CDIB card listing me as one-eigth because of the only people “proven” on the rolls. I am asking this not for “benefits” I do well enough, it is just for me, I want to move and be around people like me, all my family has passed over in the last two decades, I want my children to go to school and not be called to many names (like asian buffalo), and I want to get my Nurse Practioner license to go and help my people, whether I am “official” again or not. I am from the “Twister” clan, I was told that was the “long-hair” clan. I have had a long journey in my short life, and I want to come to what is now “home”. Oscar Shaw, III
Query: My great grand mother, Mary Ann Moten Wilson, died on January 24, 1949, in South Carolina. Near the Pickett Plantation in Lugoff, SC. She was married to a Robert Wilson, from what I have been told, but also she was said to be of Cherokee descent. One of her sons, Henry Wilson, was my grandfather.
