Query: I’m trying to solve a family mystery. We know we are descendents of the Houston family, presumably Sam Houston’s ‘brother’. There was some scandal involved because the spelling was changed to ‘Huston’. The farthest back we have traced is to James Logan Huston, born 1845 in Texas, and died 1912 in Texas. He would have been have been either Cherokee or Comanche. I have learned of no interactions between any of Sam’s brothers and any native tribe. My questions are, did Sam Houston or any of his brothers have any dealings with the Cherokee that would have produced offspring? Why is the ‘Houston’ name listed as a ‘Cherokee’ name in the lists of names? All members of my family who had any knowledge of this have long since died. My great grandmother , Jennie Pearson, born Ida Jane Huston in 1879, was 1/4 ‘indian’ and lived in Texas and Colorado. Her daughter, Cleo, married Vernie Hill, a descendent of John C. Calhoun, an enemy of Sam Houston, in Joshua, Texas in 1920.

Robin Lockhart
Query: My name is Robin Lockhart. My mother, Patricia Sue Beckley Lockhart, is the daughter of Bernadine Buschman and was born on 17 September 1955 in Hobbs , New Mexico . My grandmother, Ms Buschman, became pregnant unwed and was married off by the family in shame. It has been a HUGE family secret as to who the father was. She has kept this secret from my mother and then she alienated the entire family including her children. Over the years, my mother has pleaded with her for information. Recently we discovered the father was full Cherokee and that was one of the main reasons for the secrecy. Prejudice of interracial relationship is nothing but cruel in our eyes. We were also told the father has tried all of my mother’s life to find her and make himself known to her according to Ms Buschman’s sister, but the family has continued to circle the wagons in secrecy. To this day, we still do not have a name for our Grandfather. However, we were told he was in Arizona over 3 years ago in a care facility suffering from sclerosis of the liver and that he had lived in Hobbs , New Mexico his entire life before that. My mother has wanted to know her father all her life. We now fear he may be deceased from his illness, since the lead is over 3 years old. We want him to know he is unconditionally loved and respected. We know his absence was not of his own doing. We hope to have a relationship with him and his family if at all possible.

Query: Family stories exist that a Sarah Angelina Townsend , born about 1861 or 1862, who married George Washington Long, born 1853, ‘signed’ Cherokee Indian treaties of some kind. It is said, she did a lot of work for the Cherokee Indians. I assume this would have taken place in Texas, since she was born in Texas and lived her life in Texas. I’m not convinced these family rumors are true. Could you help me find out if she had anything to do with the Cherokee Indians? Her father was Alex Bryant Townsend, b, about 1825 in Alabama. Her mother was Elvira Brymer, b, 1831 in Tennessee. I haven’t been able to find a connection between the Cherokee and Sarah.
