Olivia Coles

Query: Enice COLES (3/31902 – 4/26/1967) parents are Dan and Sally COLES who are from danville virginia who were slaves and worked on the COLES plantation. Enice is very hard to track so I suspect a name change. He states that his one of his grandfathers were cherokee. My grandfather roy COLES says he also remembers this indian man as his great grandfather. we think enice had around 15 siblings but we can only halfway recall the names jean & lucille COLES. running into a brick wall. Can’t really verify if his parent real names are dan and sally 🙁

Query: Trying to find the birth parents of my grandmother. She was adopted as a young child but found no adoption records. She has been listed in census records starting in 1920 census when she was 9 years old, living in the Skaggs household as a border along with a Warren BRICKEY, 27 years old. Her first name is Hytha and have found her under Hetha as well. She was listed in 1940 census as Hytha M. BRICKEY HUTCHINSON. Found different spelling of BRICKLEY also. My father, Cletus Martin HUTCHINSON Jr, knew only she was passed around families at a young age. Census states she was born in Tennessee in 1910. Just want to find my Cherokee family.

Query: Vivion BELVAN LARMON VIVION, was born abt 1849.. 1851 His adopted parent were married in 4 Oct 1855. So he was probably older than 4-6 years old. He showed up on a census when he was 19. So somewhere inbetween 1855 and 1870 is when the LARMON family took him in and cared for him. He said he was forcebly taken from his real family and given to the larmons and that he was Cherokee. He is named after Mary CROSTWAITES father, Vivion. so i dont know what his birth name is. Vivion and and my great grandmother Sophronia lucinda LANGWORTHY, was already, seperated when thier daughter, Leora turned up on a 1900 census in Texas. My grandmother Leora was 2 and her oldest brother eugene was eight. on that 1900 census Sophronia lucinda LANGWORTHY, claimed Leora as her niece and on a 1910 census Sophronia lucinda LANGWORTHY, claimed Leora as a stepdaughter. He left Texas and turned up on a 1900 census in New Mexico, Vivian lived in New Mexico. and on a 1900 census, sophronia lived in Texas. This has been a hard trail to follow. I just know that my grandmother leora died when i was young and that she had tried to find her real family but couldn’t find a way. i am hoping that there might be records of adoption of cherokees. he was adopted in tolono illinois. by Isaac LARMON and Mary CROSTHWAIT LARMON.

Query: Good Evening,
I’m tracing my BAILEY ancestry in search of important information and any ancestry of Indian blood.
Our searches for Benjamin BAILEY 1755-1813, his wife, Ann Elizabeth WATKINS 1764-1812, and their one son Jeremiah 1784-1825, is at a standstill. To continue our lineage we need more information about this line of Bailey’s and I’m hoping you can help with this. Our family line is in Nottoway County, Virginia and surrounding areas.
In the 1812 Widows pension documents for Mary Ann ANDERSON, B.W. BAILEY mentions in a letter he had a cousin James R. GATES and notes he died June 1871. Cousins are usually connected via Aunts and Uncles, I’m wondering.
James R. GATES mother was a Sarah BAILEY b. 1753 in Chesterfield, Va, who was a daughter of a Benjamin BAILEY b. 1736??. Sarah BAILEY b. 1753 married a James GATES who was the parents of this James R GATES mention in B.W. document. Sarah BAILEY had siblings Abraham b. 1758, Rachael b. 1763 and Henry b. 1785. I’m wondering if this Sarah BAILEY could have been a sister to our BB b. 1755?, this would make Sarah BAILEY‘s children cousins to Benjamin W. BAILEY?
One last detail that has left us completely baffled is that of my great/great-grandmother. She is the daughter of Benjamin Watkins BAILEY 1814-1899 and named Lillie Irving BAILEY SKELTON 1863-1959. Our tree confirms her birth, death and marriage to John Washington SKELTON and then ends. We’ve visited her grave (Amelia, Va) and found she and John was buried separately, which leaves us wondering if she was Indian.
I appreciate your time and any information you may have to help us.
Thank you,
Vicki Skelton Scott

Query: I am a descendent of William Lestley (possibly Leslie) RICHMOND. The only information I have on his parents is that his father immigrated from Germany through England to Virginia. He was a cobbler and said to have married a blind Cherokee woman. When the father immigrated, he changed his original name REICHMANN to RICHMOND. My problem is that I can find no information about his Cherokee wife to add to my family tree. I know her son, William L. RICHMOND, didn’t know his biol. father, as he thought the man that raised him was his father. The blind mother and son supposedly walked the Trail of Tears. There is distant relative chatter that Chief John ROSS is connected somehow-maybe a surrogate father(?), but I don’t know if this is sensationalism or fact. I’d appreciate any advice on following the Native American side of my family tree.
