Merle C. Stevens
Query: My last name is Stevens. My Great-grandmother’s name was Henrietta Hanson-Hill (Pound) STEVENS, born 1825. She was a full-blood Cherokee. My problem is this knowledge was passed down through my family by word-of-mouth. Now, all of the family members who told me this when I was a small child are dead. I do not know where I can find any record of her birth–I think she was born in Stanhoe(?), Georgia, but I cannot find any record of her birth in that town or county. Her husband–my Great-grandfather, was Wilkins Bohannon Stevens, also was part Native-American, possibly Cherokee (that came from the Bohannon). The both of them lived a short while in NC, Georgia and finally in Rock Mills, Alabama, where Wilkins and sons, William, James, and George, and Wilkins’ partners built a mill–which was one of several mills which were built by the Stevens. The mill in Rock Mills, Alabama, changed ownerships several times and is now known as the Wedhadkee Yarn Mills. My great-grandfather’s picture hangs on the wall of the mill’s office there. If there is anyone in cyberspace that can tell me how I can find some trace of these G-Grandparents pointing to their native-American connection–please e-mail.

Query: Hello. I’m new at this, so hope I include enough information. I am supposedly a descendant of Chief White Horse of the Cherokee Nation. My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Banks (Little Fawn). She had two brothers named Shales and Jim Corder. Elizabeth married Richard Thacker and her children were Crayton, Elga, Florence, Ethel and Audley. Elga Thacker was my grandfather and married Pearl Pugh, who was of Blackfoot and Seminole heritage. Their children were Clyde, Winston (Vern) and Donald. Vern was my father, married to Charlene Carr. My mother is supposedly also a descendant of Cherokee heritage. Descendant of James Gray Sanders, “History of Northwest Arkansas”, Goodspeed, 1889. I am curious to see if any of our family legends are true.

Query: Agnes Tyner was probably at least half Cherokee and was born about 1780/90. In about 1804 she married Robert Crump, who later became a judge in Franklin County Ga. By 1846 Agnes had disappeared and Robert married her niece Nancy Tyner. Everyone assumes that Agnes had died by that time, but that assumption may not be correct. An old aunt told me that Robert “ran Agnes off” so he could marry Nancy and that Agnes went to live with the Cherokees and may have died in MS. Everything else that lady told me has been proven true. It sounds as if Agnes may have began the trip to IT, but didn’t make it.

Query: Gordon – Seeking information on Gordons in Cherokee Nation, east Tenn., ca. 1810-1838. My GGG grandfather Andrew J. Gordon was b. ca. 1816 in east TN. His father (first name unknown) was born in NC; mother (name unknown) was said to be a Cherokee (b. TN) who divorced Gordon and then married a man named Miller. They apparently had more children. She is said to have been removed in 1838 on the Trail of Tears with younger children; however, her 2nd husband and older children were not removed. I have found two potential households with the name Miller in the 1835 census of the Cherokee Nation in TN (David Miller and Ave Miller), but no Gordons. Do not know if other Gordon children besides Andrew. Andrew married Sarah ___ and lived in Roane Co., TN in late 1830’s. He migrated to DeKalb Co., TN ca. 1841, and on to Trigg Co. Query: My grandmother’s maiden name was Adaline Berry. I’m not sure, but she may have been born in Indiana, where she married Charles O’Haver (my grandfather) and had 14 children. My father was the third oldest child and was born in 1911, so my grandmother, Adaline Berry, was probably born in the late 1800’s. I have always been told I am third generation Cherokee, but I don’t know much more than that. I believe my grandmother’s family was from North Carolina, but I am not at all certain about anything since I’m the youngest of five children in my family and as such, most of my family has passed over before me without leaving much of a family history. If you have any information about my grandmother, Adaline Berry, I would be very apreciative.

Katherine Fowler
Query: Looking for the real name of Aunt Sue (?), adopted by the Fowler family. I am looking for my great grandmother’s real name. I doubt this is possible because she was adopted by the Fowler family before her parents left on the Trail of Tears, but maybe someone could help. I just want to know how I can help or contribute to the Cherokee Nation and where to start.

She was adopted 18 months later, and her birth certificate changed to reflect her adoptive parents as her biological parents. We are seeking information on her birth parents.

Query: I am attempting to find ancestors of the Gunnells (or Gunnels) surname. James Evan Gunnells was born in 1903 (give or take a year or so) in Robert Lee, TX. He died in 1984. His people came from the South (Alabama) and are supposed to be part Cherokee. This fact was obscured because being part Native was not popular at the time. I would like to hear from anyone related to Gunnells’ with roots in the South, and who know or suspect Cherokee blood. I love the Native within me, and I am desperate to know more.

Query: I am 18 years old, and I recently met my mother’s mother for the first time. (She had been raised by her step-mother). My grandmother is 1/4 Cherokee (from North Carolina). I would like to learn more about Cherokee heritage and history that I’ve been unaware I was part of until now. Specifically, I’m interested in the religious/cultural practices, as well as religious/mythical symbols. Any help you could give in answering these questions or directing me to websites that may assist me would be much appreciated.
