Query: O Siyo, We are looking for information reguarding our great grandparents. William Penny Hicks and Minnie Snow Hicks (ne Finn?) They were from Little Rock, Arkansas and had 5 or 6 children, Fred, Connie, Bill, Fairy; to name a few. My great grandfather was a cotten farmer, and was apparently assasintated while selling his goods. My grandmother, Minnie Snow was known fondly as “Black Minnie” by the soliders during the Civil war. It is our understanding that they were Cherokee, Choctaw, Blackfoot, and African American. If anyone can provide us with any information we would be most grateful. Wado All My Relations

Query: I have very little to go on except a story from my mother that she was told by her mother that she was told by her mother and so on. Pretty typical. I am writing a book and just beginning my search. I have very little to go on. My mother’s maiden name was Barbara Jeanne Layton. Her mother’s maiden name was Harriet Marie Breckenridge. Her mother married a Breckenridge. They were the Ohio Breckenridges. The story is sometime around what has been called the, “French and Indian War” period, a Breckenridge, in the army, married a Cherokee woman. I want to find out if that is true and if she is my grandmother, I want to know her. I feel a very strong urge to find this woman who I feel has come to me and is helping me with this book. If she indeed existed and is my Grandmother, I want to honor her memory. Thank you for any information you may have.

Query: I have two children that are Cherokee, on their fathers side. I am not Cherokee. Their father left them several years ago and they do not see any of that side of their family. I would like for them to know the heritage and also their family history. I have heard some fascinating stories about their grandmother coming over with the Trail of Tears, she settled in the Stilwell Ok. area. I had the privilage of meeting their great-grandfather before he passed, but I don’t remember his name. I do know that they were all raised around the Tahlequah area. Some of the names are: Grandfather-Gomer Smith/living; Father-Dudley Smith/living but dont know where; Aunt-Mary Jo Huffman/living; and Donna Gail Stephens/passed. I have been diagnosed with cancer and would like to leave my kids with the background and history of their family. Their great-grandfather was very interesting and I want them to know the things that I was told. This may be their only chance. Please send me all the information possible, I am doing this all on my own and I have no funds so I am finding all I can the best way I know how. I would like for them to have the FamilyTree.

Query: Hello, My name is Sharon White. I guess I would be considered a Black Indian. My great-grandmother was half Black & Indian, my great-grandfather was full blood Indian. The thing is that I don’t know what kind of Indian. I would love to know because these people made me. I know that when slaves ran away it led to Indian tribes and the red man hand was held out to African slaves. I can’t trace my history to Africa but I can trace it back to Indian ancestory. I feel that because I decended from two suppressed people it made me a strong individual. And I give praise to my past because they overcame so much and started a new race of people. I’m from Fayetteville, NC and I don’t know what tribe was strong in the area in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s but I know my great grandma was beutiful. Please help me find myself. Proudly Red and Black.

Query: My mother J. Mckinnie, maiden name “Simmons” has been trying to search for our family ancestory for over ten years now and is at a standstill. Most of her mothers family, my grandmother, L. Simmons, maiden name “Arrington” have passed on. This would include my ggmother Martha Huntley McQueen. I have been told that my ggmother Martha was Cherokee Indian. This is what I’ve heard. My grandmothers real father was Calvin Huntley who was an African American. And her stepfather was an “Arrington”, first name unknown. She also has a half brother named Sam McQueen and sister named Luretha. My grandmother was married to my grandfather Charlie Simmons who passed away when my mother was a young girl and he has/had a sister named Maggie. This is all I know about his side of the family at this point. I am told that our family history was derived from a town called “Littahachet, AL.” Also, many family members were slaves on the “Williams Plantation.” Other key states where most of our family history came from were Georgia and Mississippi. As I’ve stated my mother has been seaching for many years and has more information. I know how much this means to her so I am going to try and help her as much as I can. I am going to list some surenames of our extended family and hopefully someone somewhere can help us. Some of the names were: Arrington, McQueen, Hampton, Hastings, Harrington ?, Huchinson, Simmons, Smith and Williams. If any of these names ring a bell please don’t hesitate to contact me because I know we can help each other in this search. Out of all of my grandmothers grandchildren, I am so far the only one married and have children. I would like to find family members before my children become grownups so they may know who I am and where I came from.

Query: I am trying to find (any) Cherokee name for my family. My grandmother was Cherokee. Her parents died when she was a child and she and her four sisters were adopted by different families in and around Wright Co. Missouri. I have the names of my grandmother’s parents and grandparents. None are Cherokee names. My grandmother told my mother that the names were chosen because the families didn’t want anyone to know that they were Indian because they wouldn’t have been able to buy land. The names are: My grandmother’s maiden name was Elma Catherine Lathrom. Her birth cert. lists her as Catherina Elma. She had four sisters; Edith (1904), Ethel (1906), Ruby (?) and Mildred (?). Their parents were Joseph Franklin Lathrom born 12/18/1876 near Rayborn, Mo. and Mary Belle Dean born 05/1988. Joseph’s parents were William Wesley Lathrom and Samantha Mills Lathrom. Mary Belle’s parents were Joshua Alsup Dean and Susan J. Sullens Dean. I believe that most of these people lived in Southern Missouri or Northern Arkansas. Joseph died and Mary Belle remarried. Mary Belle died shortly thereafter and the girls step-father couldn’t care for them. They were actually put on the mail cart and the mail man found different families to take them in. I can’t tell you how much it would mean to my family to be able to find our Cherokee name. My mother tried to find it when I was a child and she didn’t succeed. I’m hoping that there is more genealogy documentation now and that I will have better luck.

Query: I am in the process of filling out the application for the Cherokee National Historical Society “First Families of the Cherokee Nation” membership application. My first cousin is Gary Dean Chapman, and he is listed as an ancestor of Hair Conrad in the above. When discussing this with my mother, Alice Sunday Gist, she disagrees with the information given in Emmet Starr’s book, “History of the Cherokee Indians” as shown for my grandfather, Andrew Sunday. Starr’s book lists grandfather’s parents as Nicholas Hair, and Lucinda Robertson. Mother is 83 and the last of the Sunday family, but she is as sharp as a tack! She tells me that her father’s parents were Jesse Sunday who was married to Alice Hair. I am further told by mother that Jesse Sunday and Alice Hair were “Old Settlers”, and if this is fact would the lineage for the “First Families” application come through these ancestors rather than Hair Conrad? So, I am confused and would appreciate any assistance you can give.

Query: Looking for the Beaver/Beavers line and I am not having any luck. This is what I do have. Minnie Beaver was born November 1863, Texas. she married Jesse Kinman, March 29, 1885, Erath County, Texas. In a letter dated 1977, it states that Minnie died on a reservation near Durant, Yarnaby Community, Oklahoma, buried in Yuba Cemetery. Father’s name was Jim Beavers. It is believed the family was Cherokee, but Mr. Kinman (Jack, her son) said his mother was Regular Delaware. Minnie, returned to the reservation when she discovered she was going to die. She had a regular funeral and then an old Indian Chief performed ceremonial dances. The cemetery in Yuba is now on private property. No one is allowed on the property. Her grave was placed under a hugh Hackberry tree. The cemetery may not exist any more, because when someone went looking for it, they found the property the cemetery was suppose to be located on, was covered with heavy machinery. The man who owned the property was working on leveling, ect. Her death certificate is on record at the Durant Court house, Durant Oklahoma, which is only 17 miles from the Yuba Cemetery. It can not be read except the name is discernible. Jim Beavers the father of Minnie is buried in Oklahoma in Indian Territory near Ardmore. If anyone can help me with this family, I would be a very happy camper.

My grandmother remembers going to Tallequah, OK for family gatherings. She also remembers going to a reservation in OK for a celebration of some kind. All of her father’s family were there. She has told me that granmy Sarah (Sarah Fewell Crabaugh) was full blooded Indian. I have tried to trace this Fewell line and have come to a dead end. I am not sure which tribe if any she would have belonged to. Sarah was married to Issac Crabaugh in either Benton Co., AR or near Tellaquah, OK. Apparently her parents escaped the Trail of Tears. I was wondering if anyone knew where they might have gone following that horrific roundup. There is a family listed on the 1851 Siler roll which fills the bill, but they are in North Carolina. Were the Virginia Cherokees forced onto the reservation there? Nancy later moved to Ohio, where she married John Harrison, and gave birth to two sons, Charles and Edward. Any info would be extremely appreciated.

I don’t know either of their parents’ names. Also, on my father’s side, his mother’s last name was Byrd, I don’t know much about her side of the family because she was killed when my father was four years old. My father’s father’s name was Curtis Ivnor Cavanaugh. I know that Cavanaugh is an Irish name, but my father has mentioned that there was Cherokee on that side as well. I’ve recently discovered that my family is a whole mix of things, but have been unable to trace my Native American roots because there are no remaining documents to help in my search. I would really appreciate it if you could help me. Thank you, Cresta (age 20)

Query: Howell, Fleetwood, White, Mullins: I am trying to trace my Cherokee roots on both sides of my family. On my father’s side, a man with the surname Howell married a Cherokee woman whose name is unknown to me. They had a son named William Cornelius Howell who married a Cora Lee Hill and had a daughter named Elva (Elvie) Virginia Howell. Elva was born July 31, 1891 in Seaboard, North Carolina. She married William Clarence Fleetwood on March 9, 1911 in Seaboard. They had 6 children: Wilson Clarence, Virginia Lee, William Howell, Rosa Faye, Henry Burnett, and Robert Millar. Robert Millar Fleetwood married Mary Burton Townsend and later Zelma May Brann. My father, Robert Millar Fleetwood, Jr., is the only offspring of that first marriage. I am looking for information on Elva’s grandparents, the unknown Howell and Cherokee woman. I would like to know their names, where they came from, and if the Cherokee woman was enrolled with either the Eastern or Western Cherokee.
On my mother’s side, I am looking for information on my grandmother’s parents and grandparents. My grandmother’s maiden name is Mary Ruth White and her married name is Gebron. Her father’s name was Goodloe White and her mother’s name was Polly Mullins before she married him. They lived in Hazard, Kentucky. Goodloe’s mother’s name was Millie Watts before she married. Her husband’s name is unknown, except for the surname, White. Polly Mullin’s mother’s name was Sylvanie Mullins (don’t know her maiden name). Polly’s father’s name was Elias Mullins. Supposedly, according to my grandmother, Elias Mullins was a Cherokee who built houses and who gave her the house she now resides in. Do any of these names look familiar to anyone? If so does anyone know which name is the name of a Cherokee? According to my father (one of the few members of the family to discuss our Cherokee lineage) she was adopted by the Wardrups when very young, at the time of the Relocation. I have searched in vain for any connection to her natural parents. According to many genealogists William and Elizabeth Wardrup had no natural children of their own, but adopted many. Query: I am searching for the Cherokee blood line in my grandmother’s mother ancestory. My grandma told me her mother, Armine Deaton was Cherokee. I don’t know if it is on her mother or father’s side – or both. I am having trouble tracing it because she was a servant who was born to William Deaton and Nancy Sizemore and traded to William Strong for a mule and was a servant (slave) until age 12. Then she went to live with Bill Wooton and his family. So my family doesn’t know much history on her. How do I find out if Nancy Sizemore (born 3/15/1883 to John Metcalf, died 5/13/1917) is part of the Cherokee blood line? Five John Metcalf listings appear on the Hester Roll of 1883. How do I find out if one of these men is the John Metcalf who is the father of Nancy Sizemore? And if so, what quantum blood does he show? And how to I find out if great-grandma Armine’s father, William Ambrosh Deaton (son of Squire Deaton according to the Breathitt County Census of 1880 in Kentucky) is part of the Cherokee blood line?

Query: At least one of my great-great grandparents, Van Pelt, Eliza Jane born Nov 10, 1853 in Magnolia Arkansas and Palmer, Samuel Parmaneas (sp?) or Samuel P. born 1 Aug 1850 on the county line between Arkansas and Louisiana, were Cherokee and French. I have their parents names as Isaac Franklin Palmer, Julia Ann Autry; William Peoples VanPelt and Eliza (Roberson or Robinson). I found a Chas Palmer on one of the rolls and I believe he is a relation. For some reason the family changed the spelling of Palmer to Parmer sometime between 1880 and 1920. Lore in the distant family speaks of someone who brought in slaves after abolition and was hung, and of a gambling murder on the Mississippi. I can confirm neither story so far nor am I certain if either had anything to do with the name change. I also have a curiosity about the name Quinn. I have heard the name mentioned in my genealogy also. I have seen my great grandma Mary Annie Parmer Sinclair in a photograph. She looked very Indian and used to say when asked that she was French and Indian. It was my grandpa who told me she was Cherokee. I have found Samuel and Eliza in Louisiana in 1880 but have had trouble finding records for their parents, names that great grandma gave us. I thank anyone who can provide me any additional information. I also wanted to mention that one of the episodes of the Antique Roadshow featured a black gentleman in possession of a book of paintings featuring ancestors of an Indian princess named Eliza Jane Arianwah (sp?) Quinn. They had inherited it from their father who would never tell them how he came to possess it nor how it related to their family. I am interested in contacting that family as they were not Quinns but may have been Palmers or Parmers.
