Query: Looking for information on Annie Mae Crittenden, my gg grandmother. She was born in Talequah OK 1873. She is listed on the Dawes as Annie Pyeatt. I am trying to establish who her mother was. Annie’s records state that her parents were Aaron Crittenden and Emily Roach but Emily and Aaron’s records state that they had two children neither of which are named Annie. Aaron was married previously to a Catherine Forman and records do state that Aaron and Catherine had 3 children, the middle one being Annie but that Annie is listed as being born 1857. 16 years before Annie’s records state her birth. My belief here is that Annie was the daughter of Aaron Crittenden and Catherine Forman and she may have lied about her age when she was regestered on he Dawes. Query: I am trying to verify or disprove my family’s, (Barrett, Madden, Flippo), contintion that we are of Cherokee descent. It goes back to my gr-gr-gr-grandfather/mother Sandavol Flippo and Viney Woods. Sandoval was born 1807/9 in NC. Viney was from TN. If anyone has any information on the Cherokee ancestry, or non-ancestry of these two, please contact me. I know they were not on the ‘rolls’. We all know this doesn’t necessarily discount their heritage.

Query: I am trying to find my great-grandmother. Her name is listed as either Odie Carter or Viola Bell (Hodges?). I have found a kind lady who has found some cemetary documents about her. She is supposed to be either full-blooded or half Cherokee. She was married to Turley Carter, and they lived in Jackson County, Oklahoma in the early nineteen hundreds. Her mother’s maiden name is listed as Campbell on Odie’s brother’s death certificate. I am rather sure that Odie is probably a Cherokee name- I have been studying the language for quite sometime. Although, I haven’t been able to find anyone who would know if that actually was a Cherokee name. I have seen pictures of her and her brother, and they are extremely dark-complected. Her brother has Native Americna facial features, and neighbors who knew Odie say that she chewed tobacco, which has lead us to also believe that she is probably Native American. Her sons-My great Uncles have said they always thought she was Cherokee. I would appreciate anything someone can find or has found. I would like to hear from anyone else who might know who she was.

Query: My husband is @ 1/4 cherokee. His father (Clayton Jay [Howard] Priest) just passed in 13 April 1999. Clayton’s father was Lee Priest, his mother was Amelia McCanna. Amelia was Lee’s second wife; his first was an Indian ‘squaw’ named Pearl. They had 1 child, Roy (1914), before Lee remarried. Not much has been said about their history. Clayton told me that his father would get government land and break some wild mustanges and then sell out and do it again elsewhere. Clayton married Lola Marcellus and they lived in Denver, Colorado. Clayton’s birth certificate shows his middle name to be Jay. His middle name was changed to Howard prior ro his enlistment in the army during WWII. Clayton’s grandfather was Charles Priest born in 1861; his grandmother was Dora (Dollie) Adell Howard. Clayton’s middle name was changed to Howard when a male “Howard” cousin died from a strange disease that caused the gradual hardening of his muscles, eventually hardening his heart muscle causing death. Clayton told me that his cousin turned into a stone and died. Clayton was ashamed of his Native American background and would only talk about it when drunk. Clayton was born on 4 July 1922 and died in Arizonia, on 13 April 1999. Clayton never said his name was on any Roll of the Nations; so he never followed through on getting any documentation.
