Query: My grandmother has quite a bit of Cherokee heritage from her mother’s side of the family. Her great-grandfather’s name is John Wesley Cofer. We’ve been told he was full-blooded Cherokee. The only other information I know about him is that he had 2 brothers, Bill Matthew. His daughter’s name is Sarah Elizabeth Cofer Richmond. Age-wise, I can only tell you that my grandmother is 76, so going back 3 generations would put him in the 1800’s. Any information as to which tribe and/or area he would’ve been from would be extrememly helpful.

Query: Many of us in the Mansker family have heard growing up that we had some Native American heritage, usually that we were part Cherokee. So far the truth of these legends has escaped me. My best guess is that the connection, if there is one, came down through the Brileys. Louisa Briley married William Mansker, son of George Mansker. There are a number of Brileys on the Dawes Rolls and our Brileys came out of North Carolina, ancestral home of the Cherokees. You can see more about the Mansker family at The Mansker Chronicles website, http://www.mansker.org If anyone can help establish a Native American connection to the Mansker family, I would greatly appreciate it.

Her maiden or indian name was given to me as: Bell/e (do not know about the added “e”)Cherry. It could also be: Cherry Bell/e. She was married to my great-grandfather: Marion Dee Rose. She had an older daughter (name unknown) and a younger son (my grandfather: Berten Thomas Rose [b. abt. 1902, d. abt. July, 1936 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma]). Query: My grandmother is of Native American descent. However she does not know what tribe of people. She obviously has strong Native American bloodlines as her features are very distinguishable. She grew up in northern Kentucky in a “holler,” as she refers to it. Her great grandmother’s name was Benosdl, Benosdel or perhaps Benosdle. She is unsure of the exact Spelling. I am in the process of trying to figure out her heritage. She knows very little of it due to a father who refused to speak of her mothers heritage for unknown reasons. My grandother’s maiden name is Hodges, Boone County Ky i think. Is there any way to trace her Great grandmother to a native American name?

Query: Stories passed down through the generations claim that my GGGrand mother was Cherokee from Lee, Va. and/or Hancock, Tenn. She was married to my GGGrandfather Burl Gulley. In the 1850 Census (Lee County, Jonesville, Va.) Burl’s last name is spelled Gully and her name is spelled Juruca A. In the 1860 Census (same location) his name is spelled Burwell Gulley and she is listed as Martha. I checked familysearch.org and came up with Burl Gulley, of Hancock, Tenn. married to Juruca A. Mitchell abt 1853. Anyway of telling if she was Cherokee? Does the name Juruca sound Native American? Help!

Query: Searching for Porter or Edwards and Cherokee roots. Riley (Rollie) Edwards (born Evansville, Indiana, Mar. 20, 1833, died Mulberry Grove IL, Nov. 11, 1917) and Susan Porter (b. Illinois, ca. 1840, d. Oct. 3, 1922, Vandalia, IL); married Madison Cty, IL 7/18/1861. Riley’s father and mother (no names) recorded (1880 census) as from Virginia and Scotland; Susan’s from Tennesseee and Kentucky. Looking for more information on these, my great-great-grandparents, Riley Edwards and Susan Porter. Their oldest daughter,Carrie, was half-Cherokee, but we do not know which parent that came from. It is beginning to look like from Susan Porter, given her parents’ birthplaces in TN and KY. Carrie Elizabeth, born 1862, married my great-grandfather, James Monroe Andrews, in Bond Cty., IL Dec 17, 1882. They homesteaded at Smith’s Center, Kansas in late 1880’s and left there in 1901 to homestead again at Holden, Alberta, Canada (near Edmonton). Most of their children were born in Kansas, all came to Alberta. Other children of Riley/Susan (presumably with like half-Cherokee heritage) (approx birthdates using 1880 Clinton Cty. IL census) were John (1865), Robert (1868), Dora (1870), Henry (1873), Effie (b. 1876). Dora and Henry born Kansas, all others born in Illinois. Evidently Riley and Susan went to KS for a period and returned to IL. Effie I. Edwards married Walter Blankenship in Carlyle IL. Effie was a teacher in Vandalia IL and died in 1951. Effie is referred to in an article on the web about the unveiling of the Madonna of the Trail Monument in Vandalia. At the time of Effie’s death only immediate survivor was brother Henry Edwards of Eldorado IL. He apparently had a son who lived on Puget Sound after WW II. Brother Robert Edwards had been reported in St. Louis in 1912, and in Ingraham in 1917 and 1922. Dora, a teacher, died in Mulberry Grove IL 1912 – she was married (1896) to Thomas Riley (died 1955 Alton IL). Remarried 1921 to Austa Mae Davis Murdock and had a son named William Darrell Riley (1898-1983) also of Alton. He may have had a son named Darrell Emmett. I would like to hear from anyone who is descended from any of these persons, or someone who may be able to shed light on the Cherokee heritage.
