Query: Hello, I am seeking information about my great grandmother named Mary (or Marie) F. Hicks. I’ve found a Mary Hicks on the Dawes Rolls but how can I know if she’s the right one? What year is the age based on? It roughly seems about right for when she married. Is there a way to verify a birth date? Here is what I have: Listed in “Cherokees By Blood” section, p315 in the Dawes Final Rolls: Mary Hicks, age 12, full-blood, card#6069, roll#28247, misc: “Salina”, type BB, with possible siblings under same card#6069 Ada (14F, roll#28248) and Josiah (9M, roll#28249).
OTHER: birthdate 11/27/1883. Mother’s maiden name: Berry Father’s last name: Hicks born in Texas, married in Clovis, NM, on 2/14/16 to Otto W. Bobo; died in San Bernardino, CA on 8/11/1940 at age 56.
Sure would appreciate help! How do I verify it’s the right Mary Hicks?

Query: I am looking for any info on the BERRY/SMITH families of Taylor, Adair, and any neighboring counties in KY. My paternal great grandmother was reported to be 1/2 Cherokee Indian. Am trying to find out which parent was full blooded Cherokee. Her name was Louisa(Lou)Berry born in 1848 and died in 1941. I have a John Berry shown in Taylor County, KY in the early 1800’s. Query: My gg grandmother is said to have been Cherokee. I have a copy of a picture, and she does have Native American features. Many descendents including myself have searched for her parents and siblings for years, but with no luck. Her name was Rutha. She was born in 1817 somewhere in Tennessee. Rutha married my gg grandfather Elias Craft in Morgan County, Alabama in 1835. The Craft family lived in Monroe County, Tennessee before moving to Alabama. Census records show that Rutha was a weaver by trade, and that she could read and write. Rutha and Elias had several children with two sons named John Jasper and Joseph Craft. Rutha and Elias’ marriage license shows McMinis or Minis as her maiden name. There were no McMinis living in the state of Alabama during the time period in which Rutha and Elias married. Rutha and Elias’ oldest daughter’s death certificate has McNeese as Rutha’s maiden name while other siblings have their mother’s maiden name as unknown. This is an age old mystery that no one up until this time has been able to solve. We have tried different variations for the spelling of McMinis, and that has gotten us no where. Many of Rutha’s descendents have speculated on what the reason is that no one has been able to find her parents or siblings, but that is merely speculation. Any information would be helpful.

Query: I am descended from William VAUGHN and his wife, Hannah HOUSE VAUGHN of South Carolina and later Georgia.(1790-1874)Their daughter, Nancy Jane VAUGHN was married to John Dial THOMPSON. (1828-1921)Our family tradition says Nancy Jane’s grandmother was Cherokee and the family records list her as Mollie (Millie) Running Wolf Sequoyah also known as (Amelia WESTMORELAND/HOUSE) We have been unable to verify the Indian connection of our family. I do know that when John Dial’s son, Thomas Almon THOMPSON,(1857-1937)tried to get on the Dawes Roll, his mother, Nancy Jane VAUGHN THOMPSON refused to cooperate, said she had destroyed her papers as it was dangerous to be an Indian, etc. She said some of her relatives had been on the Trail of Tears. Our family records show Thomas Almon as part Cherokee. Any nformation on the HOUSE/VAUGHN/THOMPSON Indian connection would be appreciated.

Query: My gg grandmother’s name was Rutha McMinis. She was born in 1817 in Tennessee. She married my gg grandfather Elias Craft in 1835 in Morgan County, Alabama. The Craft family lived in Monroe County, Tennesse before moving to Alabama. Before that the Crafts lived in Darlington, South Carolina. Rutha is said to have been full-blooded Cherokee. I have a picture of her and she does in fact look Native American. No one has uncovered whom her parents or siblings were. There is speculation that her surname may have been Means instead of McMinis. Joseph and Mary Ann McMenis/Means married Alford siblings in Morgan County, Alabama. I haven’t found out who their parents were and wonder if Rutha could possibly have been their sibling. I would appreciate any information.
