Query: Hello, I am looking in on my ancestry on my fathers side. I was told by a family member that my surname (White) is actually Whitehorse and I am actually of native American descent. The claim is that the name was changed by my great, great grand father due to the racism he endured her in PA. The family is from Homestead PA, we do look like we are native American, my father and I look the most though, but looks can be deceiving. I have very little information about my fathers family, just a few stories about our history but I can prove or dis-prove these claims. Does anyone know of a man who’s last name was Whitehorse from the late 1800’s early 1900’s from the town of homestead, he helped build the first paved roads in that area, he was a laborer, his great grand son is Walter White and great, great grandson Charles White? Any information would be appreciated.

Query: I am looking for the line of Elizabeth Robertson and James Madewell. Family story is that Elizabeth moved from Tn to Arkansas with James, but divorced him in about 1842-43 and moved back to Tenn with her son, Moses Madewell. James is shown as “M” on the 1850 Arkansas census. I found Elizabeth (listed as Robertson) and Moses on the 1850 census in Tennessee, and Elizabeth later listed as “Madewell,” living with Moses and his wife Dicy Swallows, in the 1870 Tenn census. She died abt 1889, I believe. All that to say that I’m trying to trace this James Madewell’s ancestry. Was he perhaps Cherokee/part Cherokee? Some family historians say his father was a John Madewell who moved from Rowan County NC to Tennessee. Any help with this lineage would be appreciated. My father-in-law is 89 (the grandson of Moses Madewell) and I’m tracing this for him. THANKS in advance!

Query: Grand father Joseph Walter Morse, believed to have been born Bigelow AK, around 1891 to Wilborn Morse and Fanny Crew. Fanny was my Great Grandmother and Cherokee. At the age of 95 I interviewed my grandfather for a college paper. Sorry I did not ask more specific questions. His father was forced to join military service as a very young man. He was delivering milk and was told he was now a soldier of the Civil war. I heard it was the Union army that enlisted him. Joseph was born after his parents were on the Trail of Tears. He said siblings had died on the trail. They were then forced to move from Bigelow to Indian territory. Father died as a veteran of the civil war from malaria at Fort Smith AK around 1901. Not sure the spelling of Great Grandfather’s name is correct. Grant Grandfather was a Baptist minister in Bigelow AK. Fanny could not go to chruch with him.

At 80 years of age she still had a horse, talked to him and spoke of talking to spirits. I never met her and all my family that I could ask is gone. I am guessing that she was my grandmother Susan diane JONES Sowers’ sister. Again guessing her name was Sarah JONES. Daughter? of JOHN JONES from Beattyville Ky or at least Susan was born there according to her obituary. In the obituary Rebecca was listed as the mother of Susan. Query: I am looking for information on my ancestors, who I was told was full blooded Cherokee Abigale/Abigail L DOWNEY. She married Samuel L Martin around 1820 in SC. They moved to North GA to Hart Co and she was to have passed in either 1850/1860 not sure. I was told she was in her early 50’s so that would have been 1850. They had three children and is belived to be buried in Hart Co GA.

Query: I am currently looking to prove/disprove a family legend. I am looking for a connection to the Cherokee through the parents of John M. Owen. John M. Owen Born: Abt 1816; Kentucky. Married: Matilda J. (maiden unknown). I am looking for information on Matilda particularly. I have yet to find her prior to her marrying John Owen or to discover a maiden name. I believe there could be a Cherokee connection with her. John and Matilda moved to Indiana and resided in Clark, Montgomery, Indiana by 1860. All children were born in Indiana (according to the census I’ve found) so the actual move took place earlier obviously. Children as of 1860: Prissilla j Owen 18, Susan Owen 17, Elizabeth J Owen 15, William G Owen 12, Margaret M Owen 8, dau, Letta M Owen 6, dau, Marthy e Owen 5, dau, Josiah Owen 2, dau [JESSIE], Benjamin F Owen 9.12, son. I am also looking into the parents of William Davis. Home in 1880: Eel River, Hendricks, Indiana, William Davis, Birthplace: Kentucky, Wife’s Name: Catharine, Wife’s birthplace: Kentucky, Race: White, Gender: Male, Household Members: Name Age: William Davis 60, Catharine Davis 58, Josephus Davis 21, Lisheabell Davis 19, Minna M. Query: When I was just a little children, my Mom would tell us kids this tale: During the latter half of the 1800’sher mother, my maternal grandmother, escaped from the government authorities and met up with my grandfather, Albert LaRue. I don’t know if they were ever married or not. My grandmother was a survivor of the Trail of Tears. If she had a maiden name none of the family ever knew what it is or was. I am trying to find out if she was married to my grandfather and also what her maiden name is. She was reputed to be 100% Cherokee Indian. My mom was born ciorca 1911. My Mom grew up on a very large orchard in the vacinity of Waterloo, Alabama. Circa 1930 TVA bought the orchard because it would be flooded by Pickwick Dam for a large amount of maney and my grandfather left my grandmother and 6 kids and went to Texas. If aanyone can help me the help would be greatly appreciated.

Query: Trying to locate more information on my fathers ancestry. I have always been lead to believe that his mother had Cherokee heritage. Grandmother Ella D. Cora Gregg came from Bays Mountain, married a Roberts, then a Wines, then Frank P. Whitaker. Mainly lived in Sullivan and Washington Counties in Tennessee. If you were to look at my dad and my sister it is very obviious that there is Native American Heritage there.
