Query: I am currently looking to prove/disprove (hopefully prove) a family legend. If anyone has any information on the Click family being part Cherokee (from my research it would be quite far back in the 1800’s) by relation to Rachel Castleberry, married Wm East in early 1800’s. I am also looking for a connection to the Cherokee through the parents of John M. Owen. John M. Owen Born: Abt 1816; Kentucky. Married: Matilda J. (maiden unknown). I am looking for information on Matilda particularly. I have yet to find her prior to her marrying John Owen or to discover a maiden name. I believe there could be a Cherokee connection with her. John and Matilda moved to Indiana and resided in Clark, Montgomery, Indiana by 1860. All children were born in Indiana (according to the census I’ve found) so the actual move took place earlier obviously. Children as of 1860: Prissilla j Owen 18, Susan Owen 17, Elizabeth J Owen 15, William G Owen 12, Margaret M Owen 8, dau, Letta M Owen 6, dau, Marthy e Owen 5, dau, Josiah Owen 2, dau [JESSIE], Benjamin F Owen 9.12, son.

Query: My cousin and I were visiting Allison Cemetery in Short, Ok. While there we saw a hand carved tombstone for a Moses Edwards. The carvings on the storne aroused our curosity as to the story behind the death of Moses Edwards. The unusual headstone reads: In memory of Moses Edwards, a Cherokee, age 43, murdered by two white men near Logtown on December 24, 1875. “This you see, remember me.” In a book callled “History in Headstones” it is said that Jesse James made this headstone. Jesse hid out at the home of the grandmother of Moses, hiding from U.S. Marshals. The home was just inside the line of the Indian Territory. Moses was buried just south of the Edwards home near the barn. Capt. James Allison purchased the farm about the close of the Civil War and the cemetery was named for him. So Moses was the first person buried here. Capt Allison and four of his children are also buried in this cemetery. There is no mention of his wife being buried there. Anyone know the story of Moses and why he was murdered. I would love to know. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help with this story.
