Query: I am repeating a query I made a while back in the hopes someone will have research more information since then: But to update the names, from the difficulty people have of understanding my accent sometimes I am ‘pretty sure’ ‘CHIEF BIG FEATHERS‘ was actually ‘Chief’ or ‘Big Father’ of the local tribe and had a Cherokee name. I am also pretty sure the Kizzy MADDEN and Hester MADDEN both were ‘never married’ in the European sense and ‘MADDEN‘ was actually ‘MAIDEN‘ and was changed later either out of cultural embarrassment or just accent. I am definitely descended from Kizzy and Hester but I’d like to find out more about the tribe / community they left if someone could point me in the right direction. Could Kizzy, Hester, and Champion conceivably sound like Cherokee names corrupted to common English names with the right accent? I’m pretty sure most everybody, no matter the race, in that area lived pretty much as ‘sustenance farmers’ in those days. They are from central Appalachia (Tri-Cities Area of Tennesse / Virginia / North Carolina / Kentucky). This is for historical curiosity only. I’d taken those DNA tests and it shows 98% European and 2% East Asian which is more typical of Scandinavia than European / Native American. Has anyone that does have a paper trail and not culturally or through phenotype Cherokee taken the ‘Admixture Gene Test’? I’m thinking the ‘mixture’ %es might be greatly influenced by the parent’s diet and environment at the time of conception or there is something more to inheritence than just dominance / recessiveness as so commonly thought.
+++++
I am searching for everything I can find out about CHIEF BIG FEATHERS of eastern Tennessee in the early 1800s. I believe he was removed via the Trail of Tears in the late 1830s. I believe Kizzy (MADDEN/MAIDEN/MADDING) of Virginia, born about 1790 was his wife. She was sent, I believe by BIG FEATHERS with her children Hester, Jacob, and Champion into the Harlan County, Kentucky mountains to hide. That is where I find them in the 1860 census. I’d really love to know everything I can about Chief BIG FEATHERS and his family.

Query: My family and I are puzzled by my great grandfather. He went by the name of John TAYLOR WATSEWAH born July 24, 1868. as John WATSEWAH. We were told in bits and pieces that he was adopted by a couple John TAYLOR and Nannie/Nancy RICHARDSON as a child which is where the TAYLOR in his name comes from. I have his ss#275-12-4987. All info we have states that he was born in Fayette KY, however KY historical has no info on him and we don’t have any “real” parents info or names. Seems he was very private, yet we remember my grandmother telling us he was a chief. I’ve dug up that Fayette county courthouse had a fire in May 1898 which destroyed some records. Maybe that is why we can’t trace him back to Kentucky. We have a John TAYLOR on the Dawes roll, its listed as TAYLOR, John 32 Male, Full, CC#7404, page 345, Enr#17532, Cherokees-by blood. Ok, how do we prove that’s him? It seems like we hit a road block and there is no way around it. We have ss cards, marriage certificate, and death cert but no birth cert. He married Ada Alnora TIPTON (Nora) in 1919 had a big age difference between them, but on the marriage cert it states he was married once before which we have NO info on his first marriage. Seems like he was hiding things. I also read he didn’t sign any Dawes rolls, but that was the first I heard of that. We know he lived in Columbus Ohio which is where he died in 1941. We also have that his birthplace could of been Oklahoma, but once again they also don’t have him listed anywhere. PLEASE help us! Everyone seems to have given up, but there has to be some way to prove that is him on the Dawes roll or there has to be more information about him somewhere.

Query: My great grandmother’s name was Ruth “Minnie” COMPTON (married to Ross MAURICE also from West Virginia). She was born in West Virginia. Date of birth 1907 date of death, 1997 (d. Florida) her father’s first name was Aaron (I think his last name was also COMPTON, but not sure if this surname came from him or his wife who was told to me by Ruth, that her mother/Aaron’s wife was full-blooded Cherokee from the Apalachias). Aaron married a Cherokee woman, whose surname and tribal information I cannot locate. I need to locate Ruth’s mothers maiden name and her tribal affiliation please.
