Query: My father’s name is Albert Joe Lee Bell, born Dec. 26, 1925, to Joe and Emma Bell, in St. Louis, MO. There is no record of his birth–he was born at home. He had two older sisters whose names were Virginia (Virgie) and Annie. My father’s mother, Emma, was 1/2 Cherokee, but I do not know her what her surname was before she married Joe Bell. Emma left the family when my father was very young. The Depresson hit, and Joe could not sufficiently provide for his three children. At the age of 10 or 11, my father was sent to live with Coy and Jean Nichols, a childless, Nazarene couple wo also lived in St. Louis. When my father was about 13, his dad, Joe Bell, was killed in some kind of automobile accident. He continued to live with the Nichols until he joined the Navy at age 17 or 18. The Nichols tried to adopt my dad, but there was some obstacle. Maybe it was because his mother was still alive. He only saw her two times after he joined the Navy. At least one of his sisters had a child. I am looking for information about my dad’s Cherokee heritage, and any relatives on his side of the family. Thanks for any help you may be able to offer. God bless you in your own search.

I had a great aunt “Lillian” who married “Hise” and lived with the Belts for some time in Arkansas around the same time frame. All information has been lost with her as she was the only family member willing to even talk about the Belts. The Belt family was supposed to have been full blood Cherokee.
